Number 15 Company, Irish Guards - 1st Battalion London Guards Number 15 (Loos) Company, Irish Guards - 1st Battalion London Guards Captain EG Concannon won the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).

The London Irish Rifles was originally formed in 1859 during the Victorian Volunteer Movement and named 28th Middlesex (London Irish) Rifle Volunteer Corps. During the Second Boer War, the battalion sent eight officers and 208 private soldiers for active service. In recognition of their service, the London Irish was granted their first battle honour, "South Africa, 1900-1902". In 1908, the London

Irish was transferred to the Territorial Force and renamed the 18th (County of London) Battalion, the London Regiment (London Irish Rifles).

Rest in Peace "The Last Rifleman" ☘️🫡

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Charles Ward at Mais House yesterday. Charles was 105 years and 8 months old.

Prior to the outbreak of World War II Charles played rugby for London Irish. Hsaw active service during with the 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles in North Africa and Italy campaign.

Near the end of the war Charles worked for the Special Operation Executive (SOE) as a wireless operator. Here he met and fell in love with his wife Margaret.

The Company and the London Irish Rifles Regimental Association send our condolences to Charles family at this difficult time.

Many thanks to everyperson who took the time and effort to send the "Last Rifleman" a birthday card.

Charles received over 250 birthday cards from around the world. A special mention to Rockport School in Northern Ireland and Trail Finders Rugby Club who sent several cards.

HM The King sent a special card to Charles. Charles also received a card from Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Army Cadets from the local detachment attended and helped to read some of Charles card out to his family and friends.

Charles had three generations of grandchildren attend his special day along with his son and daughters.
