PRESIDENTS CUP

Over May, BUAS students attended an RAF athletics training camp at RAF Cosford, the home of RAF sport.

With access to a wide range of sporting facilities, students learned from international athletes and coaches.
Finally, students competed in the President’s Cup, an inter-station track-and-field competition.

With strong performances in the 800m and 3000m students embraced the opportunity to compete with a wide range of athletes.

FIRST SOLO!!

Finally, another BUAS solo! Massive congratulations to OCdt Holland on going solo in the Tutor - a fantastic achievement and the result of hours of hard work, persistence, and commitment to the flying syllabus, despite a winter of poor weather and cancelled sorties slowing things down.

A significant milestone in his flying training, and the first real step into what looks to be a very promising future in the cockpit!

Another great result for 75 course, with more students close behind and more solos to come. With 76 course now starting their first flights, it’s great to see that enthusiasm for flying continuing across the squadron.

Well done again to OCdt Holland!

UAS FLYING SYLLABUS COMPLETE!!!

Huge congratulations to APO Higgins, who has successfully completed the UAS Flying Syllabus, becoming the first BUAS student since 2016 to achieve this incredible milestone.

Completing the syllabus is no small feat. It demands hard work, resilience, and commitment, culminating in a demanding final course test covering multiple circuit types, formation flying, advanced general handling, including aerobatics and steep turns, planned and unplanned low-level navigation, instrument flying, and the management of simulated emergencies throughout.

This achievement is a true testament to APO Higgins’ dedication and flying ability, and a standout moment in BUAS history. An exceptional result and one to be immensely proud of.

Very well done!

BUAS x SUAS SPORTS DAY

Boars and Stags went head-to-head as BUAS took on SUAS in our annual multisport showdown – on what was truly the rainiest day of the year! After tight games of football, netball, bench ball and dodgeball, SUAS came away with a close but well-earned win.

Huge well done to everyone involved - great competition, great energy, and we're already looking forward to next year! And a thank you to all who helped organise the event across both UAS's.

HAMBLE WINTER SERIES

Over the weekend, OCdt Bretz had the opportunity to represent the RAF Sailing Association in the Hamble Winter Series aboard their boat 'Red Arrow'.

The trip consisted of both a training element and a race, allowing sail changes and helming skills to be developed in preparation for next season.

Students from across BUAS continue to get involved in RAF sporting associations, gaining experience and developing skills through opportunities available across the wider Royal Air Force.

These are the kinds of experiences that make the UAS so much more than flying - a chance to grow, challenge yourself, and represent the RAF in unique environments.

CLIFTON COLLEGE CCF VISIT

Sometimes we all wish we’d found UAS even earlier - so the best thing we can do now is spread the word! On Monday, BUAS visited Clifton College CCF to raise awareness of the University Air Squadron and share the incredible opportunities it’s given us.

Our students ran a series of leadership activities that the cadets threw themselves into, giving them a hands-on glimpse of what life in the UAS can offer. It was great to see their enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see many of them join the UAS, and eventually the RAF, in the future!

A huge thank you to Clifton College CCF for having us and to all the cadets who took part.

EX MOUNTAIN BOAR

Last week, 5 BUAS students took on an SMF course in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland. Over the course of 5 days, the students learnt the foundation navigational and leadership skills to safely conduct themselves in a mountainous environment.

This marks a huge step forward in the squadron's mountaineering competencies, with students now looking ahead to winter mountaineering and mountain leader qualifications.

RAF NORTHOLT VISIT

Yesterday, BUAS visited RAF Northolt to explore 32 Squadron and learn about the capabilities of the Envoy IV aircraft. They discovered the vital role 32 Squadron plays in delivering VIP and compassionate flights and were given a tour of one of the aircraft.

Students also took part in the RAF Northolt Remembrance Service, followed by a visit to the Polish Air Force Memorial to pay their respects and learn about the Polish airmen who fought alongside the RAF during WWII.

To conclude the day, they visited the Battle of Britain Bunker, where the fantastic staff gave an insightful tour. They learned how the bunker played a crucial role in plotting enemy aircraft positions and coordinating defensive operations during the Battle of Britain.

It was a brilliant opportunity to deepen their understanding of RAF history and reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who came before us. A huge thank you to the knowledgeable staff at 32 Squadron and the Battle of Britain Bunker for their time and hospitality.

MOVEMBER

Since November 9th, our Charity Boars have been taking on Movember to raise funds and awareness for men’s health - from prostate and testicular cancer to su***de prevention and mental wellbeing.

Over the month, members of the squadron will be:
- Growing their finest (and funniest) moustaches in our squadron ‘Mo’ competition.
- Covering 90km each to represent the 90 men who lose their lives to su***de every hour.
- Lifting 85 tonnes, the combined weight of all BUAS personnel, at Horfield Leisure Centre.
- Hosting a Men’s Welfare Evening to promote open conversations and support within the squadron.

Our goal this year is to raise £1,200, and every donation brings us closer to making a real difference.
If you’d like to support the BUAS Movember effort, check out our Mo Space below, through the QR code, or via our page, link in bio too!
