Meet Ben. When his father passed away, Ben consented for him to donate his corneas. 15 years later, Ben received a cornea transplant from the very same hospital.

He’s kindly agreed to share a small part of his cornea transplant journey with us on . He has documented his journey in a video diary, which he hopes will get people to consider organ and tissue donation and confirm their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

“My vision will change for the next year as my eye heals, but already I am seeing clearer outlines of objects and less ghosting and shadowing.

"It's the greatest gift I could have received, and I wish I could thank my donor's family. I know what it's like to be on the other side, as I was there when my dad died and my family was approached about cornea donation

"Hopefully me sharing my experience means someone who didn't know about cornea donation before, might consider it now."

Only 35% of people were aware that you can donate your corneas, but when asked 61% say they would be willing to donate them. There are roughly 3,500 people waiting for a cornea transplant in England.

“I thought about not seeing my sons get married.”

When Justin was told he was rapidly losing his sight, the prospect of blindness made him think about all the ordinary things he could lose.

“If you’re facing losing your sight, you start to look at your life, and there’s literally absolutely nothing you can imagine that’s unaffected.”

“To go anywhere, I’d have to ask somebody to take me.”

He worried about giving up his motorhome, fishing, sport and not being able to watch television.

Justin needed corneal transplants to save his sight. Thanks to the generosity of two donor families, he can still enjoy the life he knows and loves.

“If I hadn’t had those two separate families donating those corneas, my life as I knew it after 60 years would have been totally and utterly changed.”

“If you can donate corneas to help people like me keep my sight, you’re literally giving me… my life.”

World Sight Day is coming up and we thought we'd see just what you know about cornea donation! 👀

Donated corneas can help people see again, they let light into the eye.

Poor eyesight does not prevent someone becoming a cornea donor.

People with cancer can almost always donate their corneas.

As a cornea donor you could help restore the sight of someone affected by eye disease or injury.

Cornea donation can take place in a hospital, funeral home or hospice.

If you want to give the gift of sight, confirm your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. It's the best thing you'll do today.
