Although the railway is now closed to the public there has been a lot going on since the last ticket was sold - although the weather has not been kind on one or two of the days. However here is an assortment of pictures courtesy of Les and Phil giving you a bit of an insight in what has been happening at the seaside railway. Everything from normal volunteer days to driver experience and a little taste of the school room.

After a busy weekend of Driver Experience days it was back to work for the Volunteers on Tuesday 6th, and there were so many volunteers that there wasn't enough room at Coffee Break around our usual table so another one brought in!

The Track gang of Tim, Simon, Eric, David & Phil replaced two life-expired sleepers by Sea Lanes, while Mick & Ian were on vegetation clearance near the sheds, with Chris 2 & Peter further towards Black Rock dealing with an outbreak of brambles! Barry & Mark were removing some of the lights that were used on the Cars for the Late-running illuminated trains and checking those that were remaining for the Murder Mystery event later on this year.

Ken and Brian adjusted the clock before preparing the sliding doors for repainting. Paul joined Les, Sam, Ruth & Charlotte in the shed, where the main task was to start the routine winter maintenance on the cars starting with car 9 which isn't required for the winter.
Ruth, Charlotte, Sam and Les opened car 9's motor and removed it's armature to allow inspection and cleaning. Ed was also on hand when required.

We have been blessed with a number of new volunteers during the last couple of months, which will certainly help to make life easier during the Winter works programmes. There's still room for more volunteers so if you want to have a go contact Mick Mills at [email protected].

Before we concentrate on the great job the volunteers and staff are doing getting ready for the winter maintenance programme it's time to have a look at last weekends 'Driver Experience' event. This saw several non-drivers have a go at driving, under supervision, a Volk's railcar. I think the pictures speak for themselves but I've captioned some for you. Interested in having a go - then future dates will be published on out page when we know them

With the railway closing for the winter at the end of Wednesday 30th September, there's just time to update you on last weeks volunteer working, which was very-nearly full house of 13 Tuesday volunteers.

The main task was to replace a sleeper at crossing 7, which involved Barry, Ian, (new recruit) Mark, Tim, David & Phil. The job was complicated by the need to remove most of the anti-trespass boards first, dig out and replace with a new timber, then reinstate the boards. Finished with minutes to spare - Maurice brought some ballast up on another wagon so that Tim could do the tamping.

Elsewhere, 'new' Paul assisted Les with one of the Cars, Ken was busy with infrastructure, whilst Ruth carried on the mammoth task of sorting out VER uniform into new plastic boxes to protect from the small creatures that can be found in the Arch over the winter!

Coffee and cakes followed at 11:00, from where we spotted Waverley off shore en route to the Isle of Wight from Eastbourne, with Eric & James on board. Tim then spent the afternoon driving.

Here's some pictures - just one more day left for the 2026 season - where did that time go?

With just a few days of the 2026 season remaining it's time for a quite look at the evening running on the 19th September when 8 VERA volunteers took over operating the railway from the seasonal staff late afternoon and continued until the last trains at 8pm from each end.
Thanks to Mick, Tim, David, Les, Brian, Ian, Chris and new member Ian, plus of course to VER's Maurice and Tal for working late.

Don't forget: The Railway Closes for the main season on September 30th - so not much time to ride the line for this year. Keep an eye open on our page for any winter running days.

18/09/2026

Don't forget, this Saturday 19th September we will be celebrating Car 10's 100th birthday, with a small celebration at 6pm, after which our VERA volunteers will be operating the railway until 9pm with illuminated trains (weather permitting).
So come along, say Many Happy Returns to Car 10, have a chat with our volunteers and take a ride on a specially illuminated train along the seafront.

A round-up from the 25th the last volunteer day of August - where is this year going?

Whilst Les was busy doing technical stuff on Car 8, Brian 2 was demonstrating driving instruction with Ken.
Maurice, Eric, Phil, Ruth & David changed a stubborn fishplate and tightened some nuts along the line towards Black Rock.
Then Tim, Brian 1, Simon, Ian & Chris 2 donned hard hats to assist the scrap man in loading up an assortment of metal items.

Coffee break was a bit quieter as Tim went through the cashiering process with Chris 2, Ian & Les for this weekend's late running. By the way, the orange box in the foreground of that picture no longer contains cream crackers, but many wonderful cakes that appear with Les now and again.

My thanks to all who provided the pictures.

Some pictures from Les of events at the railway on Tuesday 11th. Work continued on the evaluation of Southend 9's axle boxes in the south shed while out on the track we were treated to the sight of two doubles running in public service, well for an hour or so. Pictures are captioned as usual....
