Brightlingsea Community Speed Watch

Brightlingsea Community Speed Watch Volunteers promoting road safety and monitoring speeds. Making Brightlingsea's roads safer for all.

14/06/2024

Now summer(?) is here the team are out and about a bit more, including a session on Samson's Road yesterday.

Thanks to all the drivers who were driving sensibly, which was the vast majority, but not so many thanks to the three cars we logged at over 45mph (2 x 46mph and 1 x 48mpg).

That 48mph on is an astonishing 60% over the speed limit. In the speedo in the car would very likely be indicating over 50mph. In a residential 30mph area. And we were doing this at 8:30am-9.30am so there were kids walking/cycling to school for part of it.

We're not doing this to be snitches, grasses or anything else, we just think that perhaps it's not the safest thing to be driving at those kinds of speeds on Brightlingsea's roads, and that's backed up with all kinds of data.

πŸš—πŸ›‘ It's Speed Watch Update Time! πŸ›‘πŸš—

Last Thursday, our Community Speed Watch Team was out bright and early for the school drop-off hour, keeping an eye on the traffic around Stranger's Corner, near the big school. πŸ«πŸ•–

πŸ‘€ Though it was encouraging to see that the vast majority of drivers were respecting the speed limit (it was a bit damp), we did see four vehicles exceeding the 30mph zone, with one hitting 43mph! 😧 Speeding in school areas is a serious concern, and we're committed to making our roads safer for everyone, especially our younger ones. 🚸

πŸ™Œ We're always looking for more volunteers to join our Community Speed Watch Team. If you're passionate about road safety and want to make a real difference in our community, we'd love to hear from you! 🀝

πŸ“© Interested? Drop a message or email us to find out how you can get involved. πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈπŸ‘·

πŸš—πŸš« Speed Watch Update: Keeping Our Streets Safe πŸš—πŸš«

We're thrilled to share some fantastic news from a recent Speed Watch session. For the very first time, we had a session where not a single speeding car was reported! πŸ™Œ

One of our goals has always been to ensure the safety of our community, especially around places like the Primary School. We've received numerous requests from concerned parents to monitor speeding near the school, and we're delighted to report that we were able to accommodate this request recently.

Our dedicated volunteers conducted a session for half an hour before and after the school drop-off time. The presence of our signs and high-visibility jackets made a noticeable impact. πŸ›‘οΈ

We appreciate your continued support and cooperation in making Brightlingsea's streets safer for everyone. Let's keep up the good work! πŸ‘

Another session out this morning, encouraging that we only saw four vehicles going 37mph or more (in a 30mph zone), but slightly concerning that two of those were substantially over 40mph.

Here's why we should not speed: https://www.rospa.com/road-safety/advice/drivers/speeding

If you would like to join our group, either on the 'front line' doing the monitoring or helping us run things in the background, and help contribute towards safer roads in Brightlingsea, drop us a line.

Speeding kills, find out how. There is only one safe and reliable way of avoiding speeding, which is to ensure that you never drive above the speed limit or too fast for the conditions. Find out how our resources can help you.

πŸš— Speed Watch Update! πŸš—

Yesterday, our Speed Watch Group reached a new milestone! Thanks to an impressive turnout of volunteers, including a new volunteer, we managed to operate two groups simultaneously for the first time ever. A big shout-out to everyone who joined!

πŸ“ Strangers Corner: Our team recorded two vehicles speeding over 37mph.
πŸ“ Samsons Road: It was a busier spot, with 13 vehicles exceeding 37mph and one 'champion' clocking in at 43mph.

But it wasn’t just about numbers. On Samsons Road, we witnessed the beauty of nature with two deer in sight. However, on the flip side, a speeding driver almost hit a cat, and we saw a reckless overtaking maneuver at around 40mph – reminders of why our work is needed.

If you're passionate about community safety and are considering joining our crew, drop us a message! Your neighbourhood will thank you.

Stay safe and drive responsibly!

Welcome to the Brightlingsea Community Speed Watch Group! πŸ›£οΈ

We're a group of dedicated volunteers working closely with the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) to monitor and maintain safe traffic speeds in our community. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit by around 10% are duly noted, and their details shared with the police for advisory notices on the importance of adhering to speed limits.

What we aim for:
πŸš— Promote road safety and back initiatives to curtail traffic-related incidents.
🀝 Strengthen community bonds through proactive volunteering.
πŸ“’ Highlight the critical nature of speed limit compliance for everyone's safety.
