History on your Doorstep
On 19th September, in the Priory Rooms, the revived ‘History on your Doorstep’ event will showcase organisations that promote and preserve our diverse local heritage.
Focusing on the everyday working lives of businesses, properties and history. We are working with the 1ocal butcher, baker, clockmaker, bookseller focusing on their history and their properties, we will also be following a family their businesses and properties through the Quay, and remembering local figures from the past, including Francis Johnson and William Kent. Look for the Wilkinson's vintage lorry outside the Priory Rooms.
As in previous years, this event will also showcase local groups and organisations, who will be explaining what they do to promote and preserve our diverse local heritage: These will include an ongoing local archaeological project and the work of a young potter, and also feature the town's twinning team. There will also be a series of guided walks around the Church Green and the Priory Churchyard.
Local artist and sculptor Steve Carvill will tell us about his work in the Priory, the making of the Gansey Girl sculpture, which takes pride of place on Bridlington harbour, and the Barrow Boy on Bridlington Station forecourt, other examples of his work will be on show and many more can be seen in the magnificent Priory Church and churchyard adjacent to the Priory Rooms.
The Bayle Museum will be open and self guided tours of Old Town can be undertaken using the Old Town Trail. Old Town also has its new series of 'Blue Plaques' with details of the history of over 30 properties, some of which may be open throughout the day.
