🏏 What a brilliant afternoon at Connect Neuro! 🏏

This week we welcomed Damien from the Somerset Cricket Foundation for an inclusive cricket session, and what a fantastic experience it was.

For many neurodivergent adults, sport and physical activity haven’t always felt accessible, enjoyable or welcoming. Damien immediately put everyone at ease, breaking activities down into simple, fun challenges and creating an environment where people could participate in whatever way felt right for them.

Some members threw themselves into the cricket activities, learned new skills and surprised themselves with what they could do. Others chose to sit with a cuppa, enjoy the conversation and watch from the sidelines. Both choices were equally valued and welcomed.

At our group, there is never any pressure to join in every activity. The group is about connection, friendship, confidence and belonging first and foremost.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who attended today- whether they picked up a bat, cheered others on, or simply came along and spent time with the group.

A huge thank you to Damien and the Somerset Cricket Foundation for delivering such an engaging, inclusive and enjoyable session.

Thank you to Abri for funding the project and Bridgwater Town Council for providing the venue that allows this group to continue to grow.

Volunteers’ Week 2026!

Today we had the pleasure of taking some of our amazing volunteers out for lunch as a small thank you for everything they do for Sedgemoor Community Connector CIC.

Volunteers truly are the backbone of our organisation and, indeed, of communities across the country. It never ceases to amaze us how people so freely give their time, kindness, skills and experience to support others. Without volunteers, many of the services and activities that make such a difference to people’s lives simply would not happen.

Today we were able to say thank you to Anneliese, Sherie, Lyn, Lesley and Laura. Sadly our wonderful Donna couldn’t join us as she was busy volunteering at the Hamp Pantry, where she has dedicated her time and energy for more than three years.

To all of our volunteers, past and present: thank you. We value you, we appreciate you, and we simply couldn’t do what we do without you.

Happy Volunteers’ Week!

Ann-Marie, Lisa, Kath, Kira & Anthony.

🍜 Cook, Connect, Thrive – Week 3: Chicken & Vegetable Chow Mein 🍜

This week our families swapped the takeaway menu for homemade Chicken & Vegetable Chow Mein – and it was a huge success!

The children got stuck into peeling, chopping and preparing fresh vegetables before learning how timing and planning are important when cooking a meal from scratch.

Many of the children tried vegetables they hadn’t eaten before, including bean sprouts, mushrooms and spring onions, and everyone worked together brilliantly to create a healthy, affordable meal that can easily be recreated at home.

The best feedback of the day?

💬 “This is banging!”

Safe to say the recipe was a hit!

As well as developing practical cooking skills, this session helped families build confidence in preparing fresh ingredients, understand how meals are planned and cooked, and explore healthier alternatives to takeaway food.

Families also went home with ingredients to make the meal again together at home, helping to reinforce the skills learned during the session.

A huge thank you to our fantastic volunteers Laura and Annelieze for supporting the families throughout the session, and to Tamara from Somerset Council Public Health for joining us and seeing the project in action.

This project is funded through the Somerset Community Grants Fund as part of the Somerset Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) programme and is helping families build confidence, skills and healthier relationships with food.

🏏 Connect: Neurodivergent Adults – This Thursday

This week we are pleased to welcome Damien from Somerset Cricket Foundation, who will be joining us to show some fun, accessible cricket activities.

The session will be gentle, relaxed and completely no-pressure. We know that for some people, activities like cricket, PE or sport haven’t always felt fun, safe or inclusive in the past- so this session is all about having a go in a way that feels comfortable.

And if cricket isn’t your thing, that’s absolutely fine too. We will also have table tennis, board games, and as always there will be plenty of time for chats, a cuppa and biscuits.

📍 ReCreation Community Hub Rhode Lane
🕰 Thursday, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

All are welcome, whether diagnosed, awaiting diagnosis or self diagnosed but please note we are not able to offer one-to-one support. You are very welcome to bring support with you if needed.

With thanks to Abri for funding this group and helping us create safe, welcoming spaces for neurodivergent adults and also to Bridgwater Town Council for providing the space.

Chop & Chat Gets Underway!

Today we began our partnership with SS&L - Somerset Skills & Learning on a brand-new project – Chop & Chat, a men’s cooking course led by tutor Libby.

We were delighted to welcome five participants to the first session, where the group worked together to prepare a variety of dishes, learn new skills and share a few laughs along the way.

Using just £18 worth of ingredients, the team collectively created five tasty dishes, proving that good food doesn’t have to cost a fortune. From chopping and preparation through to cooking and sharing the finished meal, everyone got involved and produced some delicious food.

What was most encouraging was seeing people working together, building confidence and enjoying the social side of cooking – exactly what the project was designed to achieve.

A big thank you to Libby and Somerset Skills & Learning for a fantastic first session. We are already looking forward to seeing what the group cooks up next week!

🌟 May Round-Up 🌟

What a month May has been!

We’ve been busy with community sessions, training, working with partners on future projects, and slowly making our way through the legal side of securing our new hub space.

This month we’ve had some brilliant sessions with our Neurodivergent Adults Group, and we’ve also launched our new family food project, supporting families to cook, connect and learn together.

We’ve attended some fantastic leadership training with Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership - SASP - and Ann-Marie has now completed her Youth Work qualification with Turtle CYP, funded by Spark Somerset - thank you so much for supporting this.

We’ve also experienced the highs and lows of grant funding, but we are absolutely thrilled to have secured significant funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

All in all, it has been an amazing, busy and exciting month.

So what has June got in store?

Hopefully, this will be the month we finally get the keys to our new space in Angel Place and can start preparing it to become our permanent community home.

Thank you, as always, to everyone who continues to support, encourage and believe in what we are building.

Today we brought Elmer’s Colourful Trail to Angel Place and it was wonderful to see so many children and families taking part 🌈📚

Families followed the trail around the shopping centre, solved clues, enjoyed colouring and literacy activities, and took home a free book to continue the reading fun at home.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, to Angel Place Shopping Centre for hosting us, and to the National Literacy Trust for supporting children’s reading and storytelling.

Seeing children excited about books, creativity and imagination is exactly why community events like this matter so much

Thank you so much to the following shops for displaying our clues-

The Crafty Collective
The Works
Bon Marche
The Sky Kiosk.
