Have you spotted the striking new sculpture being installed by the lake at Royal Bournemouth Hospital?

'Quercus', named after the Latin word for oak, is part of a collaboration between Art Space, UHD's arts programme, and the Trust's Sustainability team.

On long-term loan from artist Rebecca Newnham, the sculpture was gifted in thanks for the care UHD provided to the artist's family over the years.

Inspired by patterns found in nature, the artwork reflects the Fibonacci sequence, with colours and forms influenced by the yew trees of Kingley Vale. It will become a key feature of the UHD Arts Trail, launching in 2027.

A huge thank you to our Estates and Grounds teams, who helped bring the installation to life.

A pioneering heart treatment is helping patients reclaim their quality of life, with one of our patients recently completing the Camino Inglés pilgrimage in Spain after previously experiencing debilitating symptoms.

Jakki Rook has been receiving Mavacamten, a treatment for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition where thickened heart muscle can restrict blood flow and cause symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue.

Our cardiology team has been delivering this treatment for almost two years, with highly encouraging results. They have grown to become the largest ‘spoke’ centre for Mavacamten treatment in the UK.

Jakki, who has been on Mavacamten for over a year now, said: "I recently managed to walk the Camino Ingles pilgrimage in Northern Spain starting in Ferrol and finishing in Santiago de Compostela. There were a lot of hills to navigate and I walked 125km. Before starting Mavacamten I was starting to avoid walks and definitely avoided inclines, so this felt an amazing success for me and I wanted to thank you all and for you to know that all your hard work in the clinics."

Dr Chris Critoph, Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead for Inherited Cardiac Conditions, said: “Watching this service grow and seeing Bournemouth become a national leader in delivering this treatment outside the major tertiary centres, has been immensely rewarding. It’s a real credit to the whole team involved, but above all, it’s about giving patients their quality of life back.”

It's Critical Care Rehabilitation Day! 💚

Our brilliant team celebrated a fun day of activities, games, friendly competition and education to highlight the importance of rehabilitation after critical illness.

While critical care focuses on treating life-threatening illness, many patients are left with ongoing physical, cognitive and psychological challenges. Recovery can be a long journey, lasting months or even years, and every patient's experience is different. Our multidisciplinary team (MDT) works together to support patients from critical care, through their hospital stay and onwards to home. Nurses, doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians and critical care follow-up nurses all play a vital role.

Setting realistic, meaningful goals helps patients regain confidence, build strength and celebrate progress. Whether it's sitting out in a chair, taking their first steps or returning home, every achievement counts! Our rehabilitation day brought learning and fun together, encouraging colleagues and patients to get involved, understand the importance of rehabilitation and celebrate the fantastic teamwork that supports recovery. A big thank you to our teams for what you do!
