Struggling with your rent costs? Help is available.

Residents in Perth and Kinross who are finding it difficult to meet their housing costs are being urged to apply for Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs) - an important source of financial support funded by the Scottish Government and administered by local councils.

DHPs are designed to help low-income households cover shortfalls in rent, reduce poverty, safeguard tenancies, and prevent homelessness.

This year, the Council has received £1.366 million from The Scottish Government to support local residents through this scheme.

This week, the Scottish Government announced a £99 million investment in DHPs for the current financial year to support those most affected by rising housing costs.

To be eligible for a DHP, applicants must be receiving Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit.

Councillor Tom McEwan, Convener of Housing and Social Wellbeing, said: "We strongly encourage any household affected by the 'bedroom tax' or benefit caps to apply for help with their rent. You may also qualify if your housing costs exceed your income.

"DHPs can also help with rent deposits or removal costs, provided you're receiving Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing support.

"Our vision is to create a Perth and Kinross where everyone can live life well, free from poverty and inequality. DHPs are a key tool in helping us achieve that."

For more information or to apply please visit www.pkc.gov.uk/dhp or contact the Welfare Rights Team on 01738 476900 (Option 1).

The Welfare Rights Team also offers a free, confidential service to ensure residents are not missing out on benefits or other financial support.

From 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, the team helped local people secure over £9.2 million in unclaimed benefits - making a real difference in tackling poverty across the region.
