📢 BREAKING NEWS: Government pauses Land Grab for review 📢

I've just been advised that the government is pausing the Local Government Reorganization process in several areas, including Leicestershire. It will be reviewing the decisions made (badly) by the previous Starmer government.

Let's hope Andy Burnham listens to residents and makes the right decision this time: Stop the Land Grab!

✨ Party Conference: Three Days Well Spent! 🤝

Phew! Another conference done! After three busy days of networking, meetings, and policy discussions (plus, yes, the odd drink! 🍻), I’m looking forward to a bit of quiet time with a completely non-political book. 📖

Despite Channel 4, protesters, hecklers and a bomb hoaxer attempting to overshadow the conference, it was another hugely upbeat and positive gathering. The atmosphere was energetic, optimistic and a world away from the drab affairs we see from the legacy parties. And Boney M. were brilliant!

There were some significant policy announcements, and I had some really fruitful meetings with potential investors looking at opportunities in Leicestershire. 🌳🏭

I also met with several firms offering promising ideas for helping Leicestershire County Council save money while improving services. Of course, these proposals will need to be properly scrutinised and explored in the coming weeks and months, but there’s some interesting potential there.

All in all, another great conference: plenty of ideas, plenty of conversations and plenty to take away. Now for that book and a cup of tea! 📖 🫖

🇬🇧 REFORM UK CONFERENCE 2026: A PROGRAMME FOR GOVERNMENT

Day 1 proper of this year's Reform UK Conference is in full swing, where the fringe programme reflects a party genuinely preparing for the responsibilities of government; not just the rhetoric of opposition.

As a cabinet member for Growth, Economic Development and Planning, I'm really encouraged by the breadth and seriousness of the sessions on offer:

📈 Economic Growth & Enterprise
With the Growth Commission, Enterprise Forum and the TaxPayers' Alliance all represented, I'm expecting substantive discussion on productivity, business competitiveness and the practical steps needed to get the UK economy growing again.

🏘️ High Streets, Planning & Place
Centre for Cities and Planning Futures bring valuable expertise on development and infrastructure; the foundations any credible growth strategy has to be built on. Getting planning policy right is central to reviving our town centres and high streets.

🌾 Farming & Rural Communities
Sessions involving the NFU, Countryside Alliance and BASC will put agriculture, land management and the rural economy firmly on the agenda. These issues are too often overlooked in national policy debate.

🛡️ National Security
A party serious about government must be equally serious about the UK's security and strategic resilience. I'll be following this strand closely as part of the wider conversation on national renewal.

The involvement of organisations such as Make UK, the Institute for Government, King's College London and Demos underlines that this is a programme designed to test ideas against real expertise - economic, academic and industrial - rather than simply preach to the converted.

This is what serious preparation for government looks like: engaging with the people and organisations who understand the detail, and being willing to have policy tested and challenged. I'm looking forward to contributing to that conversation.

📈🏭 HEADING TO BUSINESS DAY 👷💷

The conference was so good last year that I’ve come a day early this year! 😄

Sort of…

This year, Reform has added a dedicated Business Day to the conference; a full day focused on the issues that matter most to enterprise and industry. 💼📈

Just like the main conference on Friday and Saturday, it’s packed with fringe events, panel discussions and policy analysis, but with a complete business focus.

As part of my Cabinet role covering Growth, Economic Development and Planning, it’s a great opportunity to hear directly from business leaders about what they want to see from Reform - and to showcase Leicestershire as a fantastic place to invest. 🌱🏭

I’ve got a packed schedule of events and one-to-one meetings lined up, so it’s going to be a busy and productive day.

The level of interest from industry this year is significant. It shows just how keen businesses are to engage with Reform and have their voices heard as the party prepares for the next election - and for government. 🤝

🚨 NO TO THE LEICESTER LAND GRAB: THE FIGHT CONTINUES 🚨
This is a welcome and important next step in standing up for Leicestershire’s communities. On Tuesday 8 September, I'll be voting at County Council Cabinet on whether we should take the first formal step in challenging the Government’s decision to expand Leicester’s boundary.

The proposed “Land Grab” is a terrible idea and it is rightly unpopular in Glen Parva, Blaby and in communities across Leicestershire. Residents have made their views known loud and clear. They do not want their communities swallowed up by an expanded city, with the consequences that could bring for local identity, planning, Council Tax, and the character of our villages and towns. 🏡🌳

The County Council is now considering the next step: sending a pre-action protocol letter to Government demanding greater clarity about the evidence, reasoning and process behind its decision.

Importantly, this is not a party-political issue. It is good to see cross-party support for Reform’s position from both the Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups. This is only right for a decision of such enormous significance to Leicestershire. 🤝

This proposed expansion would be one of the biggest changes to our county in living memory. It is therefore entirely reasonable to expect the Government to properly explain and justify its decision. I welcome this move and, as a Cabinet member and local councillor, I will continue to stand up for the communities I represent.

The message is simple: Leicestershire deserves answers, and Government needs to think again. 💪🏡

📚 Cabinet Papers Incoming! 💼🔥
A lot of reading ahead for the next Leicestershire County Council Cabinet meeting on the 8th of September: the agenda pack is a whopping 466 pages, with more sections still to come before we sit down to make decisions.

This month’s papers cover the usual mid‑year updates, including:
📊 Budget position
🏗️ An update and review of our Investing in Leicestershire programme

Plus major items in my own cabinet portfolio: 📍 Our County responses to the Local Plans for Hinckley & Bosworth and North West Leicestershire that will shape development in those areas for years to come.

And then some huge countywide decisions:
🧩 The new SEND Reform Plan
❤️ The new Carers Strategy
⚖️ Decision on a potential legal challenge relating to Local Government Reorganisation
🏫 Decision on school term dates following the recent consultation

Plenty to work through; but these are big issues that shape services, communities and the future of Leicestershire. Time to get stuck in! 💪📘

🛍️ Fosse Park Plans set for approval: but what next? 🛍️

It's good news that Fosse Park is going to be allowed to subdivide one of its vacant units to bring in two new businesses - and create more jobs for local people.

But it's concerning that in this case, and in previous examples, the Labour City Council is so opposed to Fosse Park succeeding. They see Fosse Park as a rival to the city shops, and instead of focusing on making the city a more attractive place to visit, they try to hobble Fosse Park.

This illustrates the Labour approach to so many issues: punishing success instead of fixing failure.

If the city Land Grab goes ahead, what will this mean for Fosse Park? And all the other shopping and business park areas pulled into the city's control?

🏃‍♂️✨ LEICESTERSHIRE PARKRUN TOUR: WEEK 3! ✨🏃‍♂️

Week 3 of my tour of Leicestershire’s 14 parkruns 🇬🇧🏃‍♂️ - and this week wasn’t a first… it was a return to an old favourite: Braunstone parkrun! ❤️

🌳 A beautiful course
⛰️ Just one cheeky little hill in the middle! 😅
👟 Mostly paths, with a little grass at the start and finish
☕ And the perfect excuse to grab a coffee afterwards at the gorgeous Winstanley House, Leicester!

A brilliant reminder of what makes parkrun UK special. Lovely places, friendly faces, fresh air and a top way to start the weekend! 💚

Perhaps being too honest, it was also a pretty decent way to detox after a few Friday night beers! 🍻 Although it doesn’t feel too clever while actually running! 🥴🏃‍♂️

Another great morning, another Leicestershire parkrun ticked off! ✅🦊

11 to go… 🏃‍♂️

🎂 Happy Individual Rights Day! 🔐
Today marks the birthday of John Locke, born on this day in 1632 - and, in my clearly unbiased opinion, one of the top three greatest English philosophers of all time. 😉 Locke is often called the father of individual rights and classical liberalism (that’s the good kind of liberalism, not the clown show currently calling itself the Lib Dems 🎪).

His Two Treatises of Government argued that individuals possess natural rights; especially life, liberty and property. Because these rights are 'natural', we are born with them, not handed them by government. Government’s job is to protect those rights, not to hand them out at its own discretion. The central Lockean idea is wonderfully simple: you own yourself and your life, and government needs a VERY good reason before interfering with either.

Those ideas had a massive influence on the development of modern constitutional government, especially in the English-speaking world; and most famously on the American tradition of natural rights. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 Locke’s influence can be seen in the thinking behind the American Declaration of Independence and the wider tradition that produced the Bill of Rights.

But there’s an important philosophical distinction that’s worth remembering. For Locke, a right was fundamentally something that others, especially government, ought not to take away from you. Today, the language of rights is sometimes used to mean an entitlement to something provided by the state, which creates an obvious problem. If government has a duty to give you something, somebody else has to provide it: usually through taxation, regulation or compulsion. 💷

In an age of ever-expanding government, perhaps we could do worse than revisit Locke’s original vision: limited government, individual responsibility, private property, religious toleration and the liberty to live your own life without interference.

Happy Individual Rights Day! 🥳🔐
