Israeli authorities have detained hundreds of activists seized from a Gaza-bound flotilla at the southern port of Ashdod, a rights group said, after Israeli forces intercepted their vessels at sea.
The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory, after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month.
Israeli authorities said 430 activists aboard the flotilla were en route to Israel, while rights group Adalah said some had already arrived at Ashdod port and were being held there.
"Having set sail toward Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid and challenge the unlawful blockade, these civilian participants were forcefully abducted from international waters and taken into Israeli territory entirely against their will," Adalah said.
"These acts are a direct extension of Israel's policies of collective punishment and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza."
The organisers of the aid flotilla confirmed that all boats had been intercepted in international waters in the eastern Mediterranean with all 428 participants forcibly detained by Israel.
Fourteen Irish citizens were sailing as part of the aid flotilla, including Dr Margaret Connolly, the sister of President Catherine Connolly. Among those illegally arrested and detained is Lurgan IPSC member, Helena Kearns.
The Israeli state has said the activists had been transferred to Israeli vessels and were en route to Israel.
It comes after Israeli forces opened fire on at least two vessels in the aid flotilla sailing towards Gaza yesterday, according to video footage and flotilla organisers.

Twenty-two boats and sailing vessels, all of which are part of the latest flotilla trying to bring food and medical supplies to Gaza, have been seized and captured by Israeli forces operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
More than 170 activists have been taken prisoner, including at least seven Irish citizens.
Israeli forces intercepted the aid ships in international waters near Crete, more than 600 miles away from Israeli waters. The seizure of the various ships and vessels in international waters is completely illegal and amounts to an act of piracy.
The ages of those detained range from mid-20's to a mariner who is 76 years old.
Another thirty vessels are also taking part in the flotilla and, at present, they have not reached the area where Israeli forces seized the other twenty-two.
Margaret Connolly, a sister of the Irish President, Catherine Connolly, is on board one of the other sailing vessels.

𝐆𝐀𝐙𝐀 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫?

According to Donald Trump, the war in Gaza is over.
It's hard to disagree with him on that. After all, any war usually involves at least two states in open, hostile and violent conflict with each other.
In Gaza, since October 10th and the declaration of a ceasefire, there has only been effectively one armed party to the conflict still engaged in hostilities.
The figures speak for themselves.
Since October 10th, that one armed party has carried out the following:
- 1,620 violations of the ceasefire
- Killed over 600 men, women and children
- Opened fire upon civilians on at least 650 occasions
- Conducted over 740 bombings and artillery attacks
- Carried out the demolition of hundreds of homes
- Denied free movement of people, food, medical and other essential supplies
- Continued to militarily and physically occupy 50% of another nation's territory
- Continued to restrict, hamper and deny international humanitarian aid missions
- Continued to deny international media access
That one armed party is, of course, Israel.
The presence of Israel as a key member of Trump's "Board of Peace" makes a complete and total mockery of the very meaning of the word 'PEACE'.
Among several of the other countries involved in the "Board of Peace" are a number which certainly cannot be described as democratic and which have, and continue to be, engaged in the internal repression of political opponents and minority groups.
This, then. is the start of Trump's New World Order and the beginning of the end of the era of hope that was heralded by the formation of the United Nations in 1945.
George Orwell was only wrong about the year.
The day of Big Brother is well and truly on its way.
Its dawning was announced in Washington today.
