Meet the Carver: Martin Kalman
Hailing from the rugged mountain region of Central Slovakia, Martin Kalman brings a truly unique blend of artistry, strength, and heritage to the chainsaw carving arena.
Growing up immersed in the countryside, Martin’s deep connection to the forest began under the guidance of his grandfather, who taught him how to work with horses among the trees. Alongside his love for nature, Martin pursued music at the highest level, graduating from the Music Academy with a degree as an Opera Singer.
That same passion for performance and precision eventually found a powerful new instrument: the chainsaw. A full-time chainsaw carver since 2007, Martin made an unforgettable UK competitive debut at Carve Carrbridge 2018, taking home the Best New Entry award and securing 3rd place overall in the main competition.
We’re thrilled to welcome Martin to Garnock Valley Carves. Be sure to come by, say hello, and experience the dramatic flair, strength, and storytelling he carves into every log!

Meet the Carver: Jules
Hailing from Devon, Jules brings roughly two decades of chainsaw sculpting experience and a lifetime of hands-on timber expertise to the arena.
Wood has always been in Jules’ blood. From sawmilling and carpentry to forestry and constructing traditional Canadian-style log cabins, his deep understanding of timber guides every cut he makes. Today, he channels that rich background into breathing new life into raw logs, garden stumps, and bespoke commissions—turning whatever you can dream up into reality.
While Jules has crafted a wide and wonderful variety of weird, fantastical, and imaginative pieces throughout his career, his true speciality lies in capturing the elegance, feathers, and spirit of birds.
We’re excited to see what soaring creation Jules carves out of the timber at Garnock Valley Carves this year. Don’t miss the chance to stop by and watch him in action!

Meet the Carver: Roni MacDonald
Behind Roni’s Chainsaw Art is decades of pure, saw-in-hand dedication. Roni’s carving journey kicked off in the mid-1990s after drawing inspiration from a geometric sculpture. While his early days leaned heavily into the abstract, his style has steadily evolved into dynamic, bespoke works known for capturing raw motion, energy, and plenty of attitude.
A true veteran of the craft, Roni has competed at Carve Carrbridge since its inception over 20 years ago and has previously made his mark right here at Garnock Valley Carves. Whether he's tackling large-scale bespoke commissions, carving directly into garden stumps, or demonstrating live at events, Roni keeps his process purely traditional—using chainsaws only to bring his creations to life without secondary power tools.
Make sure to stop by Roni’s arena to watch a seasoned master unleash energy and movement straight from the timber!

Cammy was ecstatic when he won this carving back in 2023 from Roni.

Meet the Carver: Tom Harris-Ward
Based in Angus, Tom Harris-Ward is a multi-award-winning wood sculptor known for turning massive logs into stunning, lifelike tributes to Scotland’s natural beauty.
Tom got his hands on a chainsaw at just nine years old and officially began his carving journey two decades ago. His extraordinary skill quickly caught industry attention, leading him to make history as the first British carver sponsored by STIHL, later representing the brand as an ambassador for three years.
Drawing deep inspiration from native Scottish wildlife and the rugged Angus coastline, Tom’s sculptures combine raw power with an eye for natural movement, fur, and feather detail.
We can’t wait to see what incredible forms take shape when Tom fires up the saws at Garnock Valley Carves. Don't miss the chance to watch a true master at work!

Meet the Carver: Kaspian Askham Carving
Based in the stunning Elan Valley of Wales, wood sculptor Kaspian Askham transforms locally sourced timber into breathtaking art for gardens, homes, and public spaces.
Kaspian found his calling early, picking up his first tools in 2012 at just 12 years old. Over the years, that early dedication has earned him international acclaim—including taking second place at the European Chainsaw Carving Championship 2024.
His creative process is a dynamic blend of power and precision: starting with the bold, sweeping cuts of a chainsaw to block out form, and finishing with fine chisels and Dremel detailing to bring intricate texture and life to every character he carves.
We’re thrilled to have Kaspian bringing his world-class craft and distinctive style to Garnock Valley Carves. Be sure to come down, say hello, and watch raw logs take magnificent shape under his saws!
