🚨 Fire at Barton Hills National Nature Reserve 🚨
On Friday 29th May 2026, multiple fire engines attended a significant fire at Barton Hills National Nature Reserve. Crews worked through the night, bringing the fire under control in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The blaze caused extensive damage to this protected SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), an area vital for wildlife conservation.
🚫 Public footpaths are now closed while Natural England carry out essential safety work in the woodland.
Following initial enquiries, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a disposable BBQ discarded into undergrowth after use.
We are following a number of lines of enquiry. If you have any information please contact Bedfordshire Police on 101 quoting reference: BP-30052026-0303.
