Founded in 1988, the Barn Owl Trust is a small national charity working very hard to conserve one of the most beautiful birds on Earth. Anyone who has ever watched a wild Barn Owl hunting at dusk has surely been touched by the experience. Sadly, these magical birds have become increasingly rare – and the reasons are all man-made. Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest si

tes, road mortality and rat poison, are the main factors to blame. Happily, there is a great deal that can be done to help wild Barn Owls, and the environment they depend on. Because they are a bird of prey, at the top of the food chain, looking after our Barn Owls means that many other small creatures and plants benefit as well, helping to create sustainable biodiversity. Barn Owl friendly land management and the provision of safe nestboxes are the two most important ways to encourage Barn Owls, but everyone can help by learning about Barn Owls and supporting the Barn Owl Trust!

Do you hear an owl in the trees at night? πŸ¦‰πŸŒ³

While Tawny Owls are the woodland experts, Barn Owls actually roost in trees occasionally too!

If you hear a classic "hoot," it’s a Tawny. Barn Owls prefer a ghostly screech! πŸ‘»

⚠️Found a young Barn Owl on the ground? It likely needs your help! πŸ¦‰πŸ©Ή

Unlike Tawny Owls, it is not normal for young Barn Owls to be out of the nest before they can fly. On the ground, they are very vulnerable and likely injured β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Here's the best way to help πŸ‘‡

Last week, we hosted 20 volunteer Wildlife Wardens from the ACTion on Climate in Teignbridge initiative at our HQ.

Firstly, Conservation Officer Kate gave a talk about the work we do at the Barn Owl Trust and our charity mission to showcase the Barn Owl as a flagship species for the wider conservation of our farmland ecosystem πŸ¦‰

After lunch, we popped our boots on and trudged off around the "LLP" (our nature reserve), expertly guided by Reserves Officer Harry 🌿

It was a wonderful, collaborative day of networking and skill sharing. Many of our visitors had their own specialisms in flora and fauna or conservation knowledge built over years of experience. Kate and Harry thoroughly enjoyed learning lots from them all too! πŸ’š
