Every two years, the EYE (European Youth Event) brings togeth

er thousands of young people from across the European Union and beyond, right at the heart of European democracy. The EYE is a unique opportunity for 16- to 30 year-olds to inspire and get inspired, to debate directly with Members of the European Parliament and other European decision-makers, and to exchange views with experts, activists and content creators. . Bad Bunny might know you bought the ticket.  🎫🎤 The proposed digital euro wouldn't.
 
This week, Members of the European Parliament backed their position on the digital euro, a proposed digital form of the euro issued by the European Central Bank.
 
According to the proposal, it could be used both online and offline, basic services would be free of charge, and cash would remain available alongside it. 💶
 
The proposal also aims to reduce reliance on non-European payment providers while giving people another way to pay. 🔐🪪

Last week, Members of the European Parliament reviewed how five Western Balkan countries are progressing on their path towards joining the EU. 🇪🇺

🇲🇪 Montenegro wants to become an EU member by 2028.
🇦🇱 Albania hopes to finish accession negotiations by 2027.
🇲🇰 North Macedonia and 🇽🇰 Kosovo have seen no progress since the last report.
🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina was urged to speed up reforms and stay committed to its EU path.

Here's a quick look at what Members of the European Parliament worked on during this week's plenary session ⬇️

🇪🇺 Enlargement remains high on the agenda, with candidate countries continuing their path towards joining the European Union.

🚗 The automotive industry is moving towards a more circular model, with a stronger focus on repairability, reuse and recycling.

🤖 New safeguards were introduced to tackle harmful uses of artificial intelligence while giving businesses more clarity on upcoming obligations.

🌱 Farmers could soon benefit from innovative breeding techniques designed to improve crop resilience and food security.

Imagine someone creating fake intimate images of you with AI.
 
The European Parliament 🇪🇺 has approved new changes to the AI Act, including a ban on AI nudifier apps in the EU.
 
The same vote also gives companies more time to adapt to some AI Act obligations while keeping the law’s main protections in place.

New life event unlocked: finding out you’re entitled to €600 compensation after a delayed flight. 💸✈️
 
Members of the European Parliament have secured a deal to strengthen air passenger rights, keeping compensation for delays of more than 3 hours, making ticket prices more transparent, and ensuring families can sit together without extra fees.

📍 Not the village in Luxembourg - the agreement that made border-free travel across much of Europe possible.
 
🗓️ Signed on 14 June 1985 by Belgium, France, West Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the Schengen Agreement gradually phased out internal border controls and became one of the most tangible achievements of European integration.

One year ago today, EYE2025 was just getting started. 🎶
 
What followed were two unforgettable days of ideas, debates, friendships, inspiration and plenty of energy, as 9,000 young people from 160 nationalities came together at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
 
The EYE is a powerful reminder that tomorrow’s democracy is something we build together, today.

A new currency 💶, a major step for fundamental rights ⚖️, and a woman making history at the top of the European Parliament. 🇪🇺

Voting in the European elections may feel obvious today, but it has not always worked that way. 🗳️

From 7 to 10 June 1979, citizens were able to directly elect their representatives in the European Parliament for the very first time. ⭐

And the first directly elected Parliament started with a major moment: Simone Veil, a Holocaust survivor and former French minister, was elected its President. She became the first woman to hold the role. 🧍‍♀️🇪🇺

A lot has changed since 1979, but European elections remain one of the main ways citizens can have a say in the direction Europe takes. 🤝
