✨ Commissioning of the Tavela Settlement Upgrading Project ✨

Today marks a proud milestone for the Ministry of Housing as we officially commission the Tavela Settlement Upgrading Project, a transformative investment that brings dignity, security, and opportunity to the 74 families who call Tavela home.

After years of living with limited infrastructure and essential services, residents can now enjoy a fully serviced, resilient, and accessible community. As highlighted in the commissioning remarks, the project has delivered upgraded FRA‑standard roads, footpaths, drainage, streetlights, water reticulation, sanitation systems, and subdivided residential lots . These improvements reflect Government’s commitment to safe, secure, and sustainable housing for all.

Spanning 3.98 hectares, Tavela Settlement has been home to generations of hardworking families. Since upgrading works began in 2022, Government has invested over $4 million to ensure residents have the infrastructure needed to build stronger, more resilient futures .

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to:

🔹The Yavusa o Natutale and Yavusa o Lewevulagi for their leadership and generosity in making land available.

🔹The residents of Tavela for their patience and cooperation.

Our partners; TLTB, Ministry of Lands, NRW McCallan Fiji Ltd, and Mobile Crane Hired Services Ltd, for their dedication and collaboration.

Today, we celebrate progress, partnership, and the promise of a brighter future for Tavela Settlement.

The Ministry successfully facilitated the election of Committee Members for the Field 4 and Tore informal settlements as part of the ongoing Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme.

The election of community representatives marks an important milestone in strengthening community participation and ensuring residents have a direct voice in the planning and implementation of upgrading works within their settlements.

The newly elected committees will work closely with the Ministry and relevant stakeholders to support community engagement, coordinate settlement activities, and assist in advancing infrastructure and housing improvement initiatives for the benefit of all residents.

The Ministry congratulates the newly elected committee members and acknowledges the active participation and cooperation of residents throughout the election process. Through strong partnerships and community leadership, we continue to work towards creating safer, more resilient, and inclusive living environments for all Fijians.

🏘️ Building Together for a Resilient Pacific

Today, the Honourable Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Katamotu Nalumisa, delivered Fiji’s keynote address at the Pacific Housing Forum 2026 under the theme: “Building Together: Partnerships and Pathways for Resilient Pacific Housing.”

In his address, the Hon. Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that every Fijian has access to safe, adequate, affordable, and climate-resilient housing. He highlighted that housing is not only a basic human right, but also a foundation for financial security, social wellbeing, and resilience against climate change.

The Forum provided an important platform for Pacific leaders, development partners, civil society, and the private sector to discuss shared housing challenges across the region including informal settlements, housing affordability, climate vulnerability, and sustainable urban development.

The Hon. Minister also highlighted Fiji’s newly launched National Housing Policy 2025–2030, which focuses on:✅ Increasing housing supply and affordability✅ Expanding access to housing for low-income families✅ Strengthening climate resilience and green housing initiatives✅ Enhancing partnerships and evidence-based planning

The Ministry continues to advance initiatives such as the Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme (ISUP), first-home ownership assistance, and strategic partnerships aimed at creating inclusive and sustainable communities throughout Fiji.

As we move forward, collaboration remains key to building a resilient Pacific where every family has a safe and dignified place to call home.

A Milestone for Housing in Fiji – Koroipita Model Town

The Ministry of Housing was proud to co-officiate the official opening of K4 homes and the groundbreaking of K5 development at Koroipita Model Town in Lautoka.

This milestone reflects Government’s continued dedication to delivering inclusive, resilient, and affordable housing, guided by our national development priorities and housing policy frameworks. It also demonstrates the power of strong partnerships with the Model Towns Charitable Trust and the Government of New Zealand, working together to uplift communities.

Through this initiative, over 200 families have already been provided with homes that offer not just shelter, but stability, dignity, and opportunity. Koroipita continues to stand as a model of holistic community development, supporting education, livelihoods, and self-reliance.

Government remains committed to investing in social housing, with sustained funding allocated each year to expand access for those who need it most.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all partners, stakeholders, and the Koroipita community for their resilience and shared vision.

Together, we are building stronger communities and a better future for all Fijians. 🇫🇯
