We are proud to share that two Taiwanese novels— Yang Shuang-zi’s Taiwan Travelogue (Matkapäiväkirja Taiwanista in Finnish) and Kevin Chen’s Ghost Town (Aavekaupunki in Finnish) — now available in Finland, bringing Taiwanese literature to a wider audience.

Winner of this year’s International Booker Prize, Taiwan Travelogue is set in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era and explores the subtle and complex relationship between a Japanese female writer and her Taiwanese interpreter. Through their interactions, the novel delicately portrays the intersections of colonialism, identity, language, and emotion. Blending food writing, travel literature, and historical narrative, the work has been widely praised for its sensory richness and literary depth.

Meanwhile, Kevin Chen’s Ghost Town is set in Yongjing in Changhua, Taiwan. Combining family trauma, local folklore, magical realism, and q***r identity, the novel follows a man returning to his hometown after many years away, confronting both his family and his past. The book received Taiwan’s Golden Tripod Award and Taiwan Literature Award, and its English translation was met with strong international acclaim. In 2022, it was selected for The New York Times Autumn Reading List and was also recognized by Library Journal as one of the year’s notable works of world literature.

Special thanks to publisher Aula & Co for helping bring Taiwanese stories to Finnish readers, creating new connections through language, literature, and shared imagination.

As Finland enters its brightest season of the year, we warmly invite readers to discover the voices, memories, and literary landscapes of Taiwan.

Big thanks to Iltalehti for featuring me for two weeks in a row!

In this second article, I had the opportunity to share more about my life experiences, including how I have adapted to life in Finland, how I see the fascinating connections between our two countries, and of course, how we can learn from one another as frontline countries in this volatile world.

It’s a privilege to share Taiwan’s perspectives in depth with Iltalehti, the largest evening newspaper in Finland.

Having served two terms on the Foreign Affairs Committee in Taiwan’s Parliament and now working as a diplomat in Finland, it is truly a pleasure to share my close observations over the past decade on the relationship between Taiwan, the US, and China, and why Taiwan’s experiences have become increasingly important to democratic allies around the world.

By the way, thanks to my friends from the Paiwan community of Sisigu for this beautiful indigenous adornment. I’m honored to wear it.

It's such an honor to be featured in the latest issue of Maailman Kuvalehti, a Finnish magazine focused on global issues.

The world is increasingly volatile. While people in different regions face challenges and threats that are often very different, yet sometimes strikingly similar, I believe Taiwan’s experience in confronting frontline threats over the past decades can offer valuable insights to the global community. Not only as a diplomat, but also as an artist, I deeply feel these connections.

It is truly an honor to share my personal journey and Taiwan’s perspectives with the readers of Maailman Kuvalehti.

The European Parliament has adopted a report on the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations! 🎉

Key highlights of the recommendations:
• underline that UN Resolution 2758 does not determine the sovereignty of Taiwan, nor does it mention Taiwan, and cannot be used to exclude Taiwan from the international system;
• engage in diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea and oppose any unilateral change to the status quo by coercion or by force;
• step up EU support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations whose membership or activities are not limited to states, including those where observer status is possible;
• call on the UN to grant access to UN events to activists, civil society representatives, and journalists holding a Taiwanese passport.

“Taiwan Travelogue” became the first Taiwanese literature to win The Booker Prize! 🎉🎉🎉

“Taiwan Travelogue” has broken several records since its debut. First winning the National Book Awards in the US and now becoming the Taiwanese literature to win the International Booker Prize in the UK! The judge noted that the book is “a bittersweet story of love between two women, nested in an artful exploration of language, history, and power.” In her acceptance remarks, author Yáng Shuāng-zǐ noted that literature cannot be grown separate from the soil it has grown from, and thus, it is difficult to separate literature from politics. Yang then stated that she is lucky to be born Taiwanese and feels proud to attend the ceremony as a Taiwanese writer. Lin King, who translated “Taiwan Travelogue,” stated that ever since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, she made a decision to focus on translating literature from Taiwan so that Taiwan’s voice could grow on the international stage, and that Taiwan’s sovereignty is no longer a punchline.

Congratulations to Yang and King on breaking another record, and we look forward to seeing more Taiwanese writers gaining spotlights globally!
