Jimma University Medical Center Receives UNFPA Donation to Strengthen Fistula Care and Related Services

Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) has received a donation of essential medical equipment and supplies from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) . The donation is aimed at strengthening fistula prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and other maternal and reproductive health services provided at the Medical Center.

The donated items will enhance the capacity of JUMC to deliver high-quality, comprehensive care for women affected by obstetric fistula and other reproductive health conditions. The support is also expected to improve patient outcomes, expand access to specialized services, and strengthen the hospital's role as a referral center serving millions of people in southwest Ethiopia.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Dr. Hunde Ahmed, Chief Clinical Director of Jimma University Medical Center, expressed his sincere appreciation to UNFPA for its continued partnership and commitment to improving maternal health.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Demisew Amenu, Director of the JUCAN, highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships in improving maternal and reproductive health services.

Jimma University Medical Center reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with UNFPA and other development partners to improve maternal and newborn health, strengthen specialized clinical services, and advance universal access to quality healthcare for communities across Ethiopia.

የጅማ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የፕሬዚዳንት ርክክብ ሥነ-ሥርዓት ተካሄዷል። ለሰባት ዓመታት ተቋሙን ያገለገሉት ዶ/ር ጀማል አባፊጣ ሥልጣናቸውን ለአዲሱ ፕሬዚዳንት ዶ/ር ደረጀ እንግዳ አስረክበዋል። ዶ/ር ደረጀ ከዚህ በፊት የአዲስ አበባ ሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዚዳንት ሆነው አገልግለዋል።

በሥነ-ሥርዓቱ ላይ የትምህርት ሚኒስቴር የአካዳሚክ ጉዳዮች መሪ ሥራ አስፈጻሚ ዶ/ር ኤባ ሚጃና፣ የጅማ ከተማ ከንቲባ አቶ ጠሀ ቀመር፣ የጅማ ከተማ ብልጽግና ፅ/ቤት ሃላፊ አቶ ዋሴ ግርማ፣ የዩኒቨርሲቲው ምክትል ፕሬዚዳንቶች፣ የሴኔት እና የቦርድ አባላት ተገኝተዋል።

በስንብት ንግግራቸው፣ ዶ/ር ጀማል በስድስት ዓመት የሥራ ዘመናቸው ያስመዘገቧቸውን ስኬቶች አስታውሰዋል፤ እነዚህም የማህበረሰብ ተኮር ትምህርትን ማሳደግ፣ ዓለም አቀፍ እውቅናዎችን ማግኘት፣ የድህረ ምረቃ ፕሮግራሞችን ማስፋፋት፣ በምርምርና ፈጠራ መሻሻል፣ ዲጂታል መሠረተ ልማት መገንባት እና ለራስ ገዝነት መዘጋጀት ይገኙበታል። ጅማ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ላስመዘገበው ስኬት የመላው የዩኒቨርሲቲው ማህበረሰብና አመራሮች የሌት ተቀን ትጋት እንደሆነ ገልጸዋል። በመጨረሻም ለመላው የዩኒቨርሲቲው ማህበረሰብና አመራሮች ላደረጉላቸው ያላሰለሰ ድጋፍና ርብርብ ምስጋናቸውን አቅርበዋል።

አዲሱ ፕሬዚዳንት ዶ/ር ደረጀ እንግዳ በበኩላቸው፣ ከዩኒቨርሲቲው ማህበረሰብ ጋር በመተባበር ምርምርን፣ ትምህርትን እና ማህበረሰብ አገልግሎትን ለማሳደግ ያላቸውን ቁርጠኝነት ገልጸዋል። ለራስገዝነት ሽግግር ማድረግ፣ ቴክኖሎጂ ማፍራት፣ የትምህርት ጥራትን ማረጋገጥ እና የዩኒቨርሲቲውን መሪ ቃል "በማህበረሰቡ ውስጥ ነን" የሚለውን ተግባራዊ ማድረግ ዋና ዋና ተግባራቸው መሆናቸውን አስረድተዋል።

የትምህርት ሚኒስቴር ተወካይ ዶ/ር ኤባ ሚጃና ዩኒቨርሲቲው ለሀገር ልማት ያለውን ጠቀሜታ አፅንዖት ሰጥተው ለራስ ገዝ ዝግጁነትን እንደ ቁልፍ ጉዳይ አንስተዋል።

መላው የዩኒቨርሲቲው ማህበረሰብ በየደረጃው መሪ መሆኑን በመገንዘብ ተደጋግፎ መስራት እንደሚገባው ያሳሰቡት ዶ/ር ኤባ ሚጃና ፣ የተዘረጉ ጠንካራ አሰራሮችን በማጠናከር፣ ግልጽነት ባለው መልኩ ችግሮችን እየፈቱ ወደፊት መራመድ እንደሚገባ አስገንዝበዋል። በመጨረሻም ተቋሙን ወደኋላ የሚጎትተውን አላስፈላጊ መገፋፋት በማስወገድ፣ ሁሉም በጋራና በትብብር እንዲሰራ ጥሪ አቅርበዋል።

ከሥነ-ሥርዓቱ በኋላ፣ አዲሱ ፕሬዚዳንት ከቀድሞው ፕሬዘደንት እና ከዩኒቨርሲቲው ከፍተኛ አመራር ጋር በመሆን የዩኒቨርሲቲውን የምርምር ላቦራቶሪዎች እና የግብርና ስራዎቾን ጎብኝተዋል።

Capacity-Building Training Enhances Editorial and Peer Review Skills at Jimma University

Three Jimma University journals—Gadaa Journal, Ethiopian Journal of Social Sciences and Language Studies, and Ethiopian Journal of Education and Sciences—organized a six-day hands-on capacity-building training for 50 in-house editors and reviewers from July 30 to August 4, 2026.

The program focused on improving participants' competencies in manuscript review workflows, effective reviewer and editorial communication, and ethical peer review practices. It also examined the opportunities and potential risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manuscript evaluation, with particular emphasis on responsible and ethical AI use in scholarly publishing.
A key outcome of the training was the recognition of the need to develop comprehensive AI policies at the ministry, university, and journal levels to guide the appropriate use of AI in academic publishing.

As part of the practical training, participants were assigned to review 50 manuscripts submitted by authors, through online journal system (OJS), from institutions outside Jimma University. This hands-on exercise strengthened the journals' peer-review process while equipping reviewers and editors with valuable practical experience.
The initiative is expected to improve the sustainability, quality, and the volume of articles published in the three journals.
The training was conducted with the support of EIFL as part of on-going efforts to strengthen the quality of scholarly publishing at the University.

The training concluded with a certificate award ceremony, during which the delegate of the office of Vice President for Research and Partnership, presented certificates of completion to the participants and acknowledged the trainers for their valuable contributions to the success of the program.
