Exciting news!!! The African Union Commission convened the Inaugural Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Symposium in Africa on 10th November 2025, hosted at the Cresta Sprayview Hotel, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The theme of the Symposium was 'Strengthening the Role of Science, Technology & Innovations for Evidence-based Implementation of the Sendai Framework' was conceptualized by the Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (Af-STAG DRR). The Symposium was co-hosted with key stakeholders in DRR space including UNDRR, U.

We appreciate the efforts of Prof. Alice Ncube (secretary-AfSTAG) and Dr. Fonkeng Eltson (Chair-AfSTAG), all supporting and participating AfSTAG colleagues, African Youth Advisory Board/ DRR and stakeholders, who made this Symposium a big success! Special appreciation to our strategic partners and sponsors the African UnionUNDRR and PERIPERI U - Partners Enhancing Resilience for People Exposed to Risk.

As climate disasters and hazards continually increase in Africa, the Af-STAG— a power house of 15 experts drawn across the five regions of the African Union—is turning knowledge into evidence based action: for risk mapping, early warning, nature-based solutions, and indigenous wisdom.

Key expected output from the Symposium is a Position Paper of the Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group (Af-STAG-DRR) - 'Strategic Leveraging of Science, Technology, and Innovation for Risk-Informed Development in Africa'

'The Voice of Igniting a Resilient Africa' at the 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR2025), “EVERYDAY COUNTS, ACT FOR RESILIENCE TODAY’.

The 8th Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 (GPDRR2025) began with preparatory events on Monday, 2 June, ahead of the upcoming official programme with high level meetings from 4-6 June in Geneva, Switzerland. GPDRR 2025 is organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and hosted by the Government of Switzerland.

The African Union Commission (AUC) convened a special session for its member states on the first day of the GPDRR2025, to consolidate and strengthen Africa’s voice on DRR to ensure that the Africa’s Common Position is reflected in the final Declaration of the Global Platform. The GPDRR2025 Platform will provide an opportunity to strengthen the implementation of the Sendai Framework, considering the progress and challenges identified in its Midterm Review and reflecting the Africa Common Position in the Political Declaration. Further the GP2025 is an opportunity to: Take stock of progress, share new knowledge, exchange best practices, and discuss the latest developments and trends in reducing disaster risk; make sure the Africa Common Position is included in the Political Declaration and build synergy and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in DRR.

Agenda 2063 - The Africa We Want
By: Prof. Alice Ncube
Associate Professor and Program Director, University of the Free State, DiMTEC, South Africa
Secretary - Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group on disaster risk reduction
We celebrate Africa day today in the face of not only challenges or vulnerabilities facing our continent and communities but in the light of successes and resilience of the continent communities at large.
Africa Day is simply an indication that together as an "Africa" we can achieve.
Since its inception in 1963, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) has surely evolved to the current African Union Commission (AUC), something we need to be proud of. The Agenda 2063 slogan of the Africa we want is not just rhetoric but also a force to reckon with. When the heads of state came up with this overarching agenda, they had engaged, deliberated, and conceptualized what they wanted the continent to be like in thirty years to come. Genealogically, this means that this was an aspiration by our African leaders, that is, our African leaders, to have a way for a brighter future for us and the future generations.
The long-term planning by African heads of state since the OAU transition to AUC is an indication that Africa will achieve. With the help of the eight regional economic groupings namely the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Community of Sahel–Saharan States (CEN–SAD), East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and Southern African Development Community (SADC) there is no doubt that we can achieve and see our aspirations come to fruition.
Going through all the milestones on the continent be it by the continent, the Regional Economic Committees (RECs) or Economic groups, not taking anything away from the private sector, individual governments and non-governmental organisations, civil organisations and individuals, one can confidently say the Sustainable Development Goals could be within Africa’s reach though it maybe difficulty to achieve them in five years as targeted. The African Union is hard at work and through my portfolio in AfSTAG- DRR, disaster risk reduction activities are not part and parcel of our everyday life and all efforts are directed towards the slogan that says disaster management is everyone’s business.
Finally, as we celebrate Africa Day today, let us all stand up and look and the achievements on our continent. We can achieve it, it is doable, and let us all continue to collectively work towards the 2063 agenda that is "The Africa We Want". … Happy Africa Day …
