🏗️ Intellectual property is not only a legal tool – it is economic infrastructure.

Strong IP systems provide predictability for businesses, reduce risk for investors and create a level playing field for innovation. When trade mark, design and enforcement practices are consistent and transparent, markets function more efficiently.

The European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO, in the context of the project, works with EU Enlargement and Neighbourhood parties to strengthen institutional capacity, promote convergence of practices and support modern IP governance.

Reliable IP systems encourage entrepreneurship, attract investment and contribute to long-term economic resilience.

⚖️Myth: Intellectual property is only relevant for large companies.
✅Reality: Many of the most valuable IP assets belong to small businesses, designers and entrepreneurs.

A distinctive logo, a product design or a locally known specialty product can become a key competitive advantage for SMEs.

🔒That is why strengthening accessible and transparent IP systems is so important. Through cooperation, the European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO supports institutional development and knowledge exchange with EU Enlargement and Neighbourhood partners.

When smaller innovators can protect their ideas, the whole economy benefits.

The European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO, under the EU-RoK IP Action, organised a Workshop on IP Valuation and IP-backed Financing online on 18–19 May 2026, in collaboration with the European Commission and the Ministry of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Korea (MOIP).

The workshop served as a platform for 🇪🇺European and 🇰🇷Korean stakeholders to exchange best practices and experience on and IP-backed financing, two increasingly important areas for fostering innovation, competitiveness and access to finance for businesses.

Representatives from the , the European Investment Fund (EIF), DG GROW, DG CONNECT, , the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA), the Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC), and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) shared insights on valuation methodologies, governance structures, accreditation systems, guarantee schemes, quality assurance practices, and lender confidence in IP-based collateralisation.

South Korea, a recognized leader in this field, shared valuable experience from its established legal and institutional framework supporting IP finance.

The insights gathered supported the EU’s ongoing efforts to develop practical IP valuation methodologies and identify market segments suitable for future IP-backed finance pilot initiatives.

This initiative reflects the continued commitment of the EU and the Republic of Korea to international cooperation, innovation, and stronger IP ecosystems.

🧩 Predictability is one of the most valuable features of a modern IP system.

When examination standards are consistent and transparent, applicants understand what to expect. This reduces unnecessary disputes, shortens procedures and lowers administrative burdens. Convergence of practices, particularly in trade mark and design examination, plays a central role in achieving this.

🤝 Through the European Union Intellectual Property Network (EUIPN), the European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO develops Common Practices that support harmonised decision-making across the EU. In the framework of the EU-funded EU4IP project, this experience is shared with EU Enlargement and Neighbourhood partners, contributing to clearer procedures and improved service quality.

🚀 Legal certainty strengthens user confidence. It allows SMEs to plan expansion strategies, encourages innovators to protect new products and reinforces trust in the IP system as a whole.
