Why ?

❗We need a Europe that moves forward, that responds quickly to crises, and that defends itself against dictators and enemies of democracy.

But yet, in the face of a growing number of crises, the EU suffers from a serious structural flaw: Important decisions can only be taken with unanimity among all member states.

In effect, this means that a single head of state or government can prevent the whole union from taking urgent necessary action with a single veto.

Now there is an opportunity to abolish unanimity and make the EU more democratic. Sign this petition to the heads of state and government in the European Council! ⬆️

After long dependence on Silicon Valley Big Tech, Europe has the right environment and momentum to lead a digital revolution – but what are the right steps forward?

Last week, Project for Democratic Union, together with Alliance4Europe and MEPs Paul Tang, Damian Boeselager, and Sandro Gozi, hosted the summit of our series on redesigning the digital space in the European Parliament.

Some of the key takeaways:

➡️ Regain Personal Data. Individuals must be given sole agency over their personal data, with the ability to control, revoke and audit access, facilitated by having a choice of secure and interoperable storage and governance options for their data.

➡️ Bridge the gap between citizens and tech. Safety and transparency must become central to design, guided by continuous, hands-on citizen participation that’s diverse and inclusive of the margins.

➡️ Funding tuned to digital. New forms and blends of faster funding are needed to accelerate today’s tangible success stories into long-term sustainable models, together with building the necessary environment and expertise to effectively deploy funds.

Excellent to welcome Andy Yen, Founder and CEO of ProtonMail, and Chris Worman, Co-Founder of the Connect Humanity fund as keynote speakers.

The Hackathon marked the peak of the Exit Platforms series of workshops, which has brought together more than 140 actors from civil society, business, academia, media and EU institutions to form an encompassing approach to the problems of current digital platforms.

The Paris Satellite of the Cambridge Roundtable on European Order took place on Wednesday. 🇪🇺

The Paris Satellite was an exercise in applied history, conducted with a group of leading politicians, analysts, historians and decision makers, to discuss and reach recommendations for the European order in a time of exceptional flux.

Sitting in the heart of Paris, the Roundtable explored new digital threats, the UK’s departure, the French elections, and the future of the European security framework.

We would like to thank our distinguished participants, as well as to Pascal Lamy for his dinner speech on the French elections at Hôtel Beauharnais, hosted by Ambassador Hans-Dieter Lucas.

Finally, thank you to our brilliant partners at the Jacques Delors Institute, Alliance4Europe, and the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge.

Much of the current European digital space is held up by business models that rely on the invasion of privacy and personal data.

So far, the European institutions have been unable to prevent Big Tech from using these practices due to a lack of regulatory tools. Now, however, there is momentum for change.

Tomorrow, Project for Democratic Union together with Alliance4Europe will be hosting the 3rd workshop in the Exit Platforms series which looks to re-envisage the European digital space and explore alternatives to the current dominant platforms.

➡ ‘Successful and sustainable: Designing new business and operational models for new online platforms’

The session will tackle what’s needed for new models to be successful, competitive, and sustainable; what funding and legislative steps are required and how can they be achieved together; and last but not least, what features are needed to protect and enhance fundamental rights and values?
