On 12 June 2026, the reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) will be enshrined in German national law.
This will result in severe tightening of asylum law, such as the establishment of deportation centres, restrictions on freedom of movement, and an expansion of the list of safe countries of origin.
For people fleeing their homes, the CEAS reform effectively means further rights violations and even more isolation – a clear violation of human dignity.
At the same time, the German government is cutting funding for civilian sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Less funding for rescue organisations means more people dying while fleeing.
We must not remain silent about this isolation and dehumanisation of people fleeing their homes, even at a local level.
As already stated in our petition, we call on the City of Leipzig to sponsor the new rescue vessel “Lifeline SAR” operated by Mission Lifeline International e.V., as well as to take a more active political stance in favour of decriminalising sea rescue and for a humane asylum policy.
On 12 June, we will be at a information stand on the small Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz from 12 noon to 2 pm.
There, you can come and talk to us and also write postcards to the city council, in which you can emphasise our call for the ship sponsorship and thus make it clear to local politicians that solidarity must be put into practice.
Brick by brick, wall by wall, make the fortress Europe fall!
