The First Vice President of the Republic Receives Abyei SPLM (IO) Leadership

Monday, November 18, 2024 - H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President of the Republic, met today in his office with leaders of the SPLM (IO) from the Abyei Administrative Area. The delegation was led by Hon. Nyenaguek Kuol Mareng, Executive Director in the Office of the First Vice President and a member of the SPLM-IO Political Bureau.

The discussions primarily centered on the status of Abyei and the recent self-rule proposal put forward by Dr. Francis Deng Mading.

During this meeting, the Abyei leaders formally presented a position paper to the First Vice President, unequivocally rejecting Dr. Deng's proposal, which they stated contradicted the wishes and aspirations of the Abyei populace.

In her address to the media on behalf of the delegation, Hon. Nyenaguek called on the revitalized government of national unity to expedite the reconstitution of the Abyei Administrative Area Assembly. She emphasized the necessity of implementing the power-sharing agreement in Abyei and other administrative areas to foster inclusive participation from all parties of R-ARCSS across the country.

Moreover, she called for the opening of civic and political spaces both within the Abyei Administrative Area and nationally.

The delegation also called for the operationalization of Malual Aleu Airport for humanitarian purposes and urged the government to deploy police forces in the Abyei Administrative Area to enhance community security.

Additionally, the delegation expressed their gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for establishing an inclusive committee on Abyei, which comprises all political parties that are signatories to the revitalized agreement.

In a bid to promote peace and harmony, the Abyei representatives concluded by calling for the convening of the Ngok-Ngok conference, aimed at uniting the people of Abyei and amicably addressing their issues.

Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, on the Extension of the Transitional Government.

Fellow citizens of South Sudan,

I address you today as we face a critical moment in the history of our beloved nation. After careful consideration and consultations, the leadership of the Transitional Government has agreed to extend the period of transition. This decision has not been made lightly but is essential for securing a peaceful and prosperous future for all South Sudanese.

The extension will provide us the time required to implement crucial provisions of the peace agreement, including the formation of a permanent constitution, the unification of our forces, and the preparation for free, fair, and transparent elections. These are the cornerstones of lasting peace and stability. Without their proper implementation, we risk undermining the sacrifices and efforts made by the people of South Sudan in their quest for peace.

We understand the hardships and challenges our people continue to face, and we remain committed to delivering meaningful reforms that will lead to a better future for every citizen. The extension of the transitional period will enable us to complete vital processes and reforms, ensuring that when elections are held, they reflect the true will of the people and contribute to a peaceful transition of power.

I call upon all South Sudanese to remain patient, united, and focused on the ultimate goal: the building of a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous nation. I assure you that the leadership of this country is committed to delivering on the promises of the peace agreement and securing a future in which all our people can live in harmony and dignity.

Let us continue to work together, fostering unity and reconciliation, as we journey toward a new chapter in South Sudan’s history. May God bless South Sudan and guide us in these crucial times.
