The German-Israeli Volunteer Service was founded in the light of the fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. It is a cooperation between the German Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior

Citizens, Women, and Youth and the Israeli Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs. In Germany, the program is coordinated by the Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany (ZWST). In both countries, volunteers can engage in different fields, such as social work (Jewish communities, elder people’s homes, care for people with disabilities), in religious education, but also in youth work, cultural areas, sports, integration,and environmental care. The program open to young citizens of all faiths between the age of 18 and 26 after they've completed school education.

The Shalva Band - Benefizkonzert ZWST & Shalva National Center

Die Shalva Band wurde 2005 im Shalva Center gegründet und besteht aus acht Musiker:innen mit Behinderung. Durch ihren Auftritt beim Eurovision Song Contest im Jahr 2019 erlangte die Gruppe weltweite Bekanntheit und erfreut sich bis heute an großartigem Erfolg.

Das nationale Krisenreaktionszentrum Shalva hat seit dem 7. Oktober hunderte evakuierte Menschen mit Behinderung und deren Familien aus der Nähe von Gaza aufgenommen.

Durch ihre Kooperation wollen die ZWST und Shalva die Notwendigkeit nach mehr Teilhabe von Menschen mit Behinderung sowie ihre Bedürfnisse sichtbar machen.

Im Rahmen eines Benefizkonzerts zu Gunsten des Inklusionsfachbereichs "Gesher" der Zentralwohlfahrtsstelle der Juden in Deutschland und dem Shalva National Center in Israel kommt die Shalva Band erstmals nach Deutschland.

Yesterday, Jewish people worldwide celebrated Tu BiShvat ט״ו בשבט -
"15th of the Jewish month Shvat".

On Tu BiShvat the new year of the tree cycle is celebrated and traditionally fruits, especially the biblical Seven Species (wheat, barley 🌾, grape 🍇, fig , pomegranates , olive 🫒 and date 🌴) are eaten. It's a wonderful family event and similar to Pessach, there is a Tu BiShvat Seder.

The poetic or literary for tree (which is usually עץ - Ez), is ILAN - אילן and thats why Jewish people call this festival also חג האילנות - Chag Hailanot or festival of the trees.

Unfortunately, in these times Israelis and Jews around the world have to deal with a lot of problems. Especially the hostages, who are being held by Hamas in Gaza, are suffering and their family and friends are desperately waiting to see them again soon and healthy. 🎗️

There are many words in Hebrew, that had to be reinvented for modern times, because ancient or biblical Hebrew couldn't fully be used anymore, to answer the needs of the early 20th century.

לקשקש or Lekashkesh (to chatter) is a good example for a word, where you can hear its meaning in the pronunciation itself! Kishkushim, the noun form, for example already sounds like the chattering of friends! 🗣️🗯️

Since the 7th October, life for Israelis and Jews all over the world has changed dramatically, facing anti-semitism openly and directly in a way, no one would have imagined in the 21st century.

Our also faced new challenges - most German volunteers decided to leave Israel, just after one month. Also our Israeli volunteers constantly worry about their family and friends, some of whom are fighting in the heart of Gaza.

So the only thing we can wish for is the returning of all Israeli hostages and a lasting peace.

That's why - shortly before Shabbat and the weekend - we wish everyone to enjoy their free time BeNachat - peacefully and relaxed.
