And thats why we work on economic and social solutions to tackle the problem of Galamsey (illegal gold mining), which pollutes water in the area with heavy metals together with our partner from Enactus University of Mines And Technology, Tarkwa.

To power our plant we plan to use solar panels. They are a cheap and easy way to not be dependent on the power grid. Since clean water is an essential resource depended on for basic survival we strive for the best reliability achievable. The last time you want to have no water is when nothing else works and you can’t even call someone on the phone for help.

To bring our idea to life and handle daily operation we need a controller, which is simply a small computer which (you guessed it) controls everything.
We plan to make ours as open source as possible. Both on the hard and software side.
This makes it easier to innovate on and replicate our design effectively lowering the bar for everyone wanting to build a water treatment system.
This, we hope, will lead to a faster spread of easy and affordable local water treatment.

The battery is necessary for when the solar panels cannot deliver enough power. This could be when the sun isn't shining, when it's night or when we are maintaining the solar panels. The battery we are currently planning to use, but are not dead set on, is a deep cycle lead acid battery. Its benefits are the cost-effectiveness in comparison to lithium ion cells and their deep discharge capability compared to the lead acid battery in your car. This means that we can use up to 80% of its storage capacity, instead of the 30% we would get when using normal lead acid batteries!

To feed our plant the water it cleans we need to use a pump with enough head (pressure) to feed the water through our filtration system in preparation for the final UV treatment. Filtration is necessary to remove suspended particles from the water as they cast a shadow in which microbes and viruses may not be irradiated by the UV light. To achieve a good result in your UV reactor our filter will need to remove particles nearly 10 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. So small, you cant even see them on your own. Moreover it is not even possible to see them with a regular magnification glass.

The UV-reactor is the centrepiece of our water cleaning plant. UV-rays deactivate up to 99,9 % of the microbes in the water. New LED-technology is able to generate a high intensity of UV light and thereby destroy the DNA of microbes. Due to that they can’t reproduce and reach any amount, that can do harm to the human body.
The technique of using ultraviolet rays, e.g. from the sun, has already been used since the sixties. But until today it couldn’t be utilized as effectively as the VLOUW project does with LEDs. Microbes thereby only need to be in contact with light for a split second to get deactivated. Furthermore the LED lights only need a very small amount of energy.
This presents therefore the perfect technology for the VLOUW project to innovate the water cleaning sector to let it VLOUW...

Hey there! In the upcoming posts we want to give you an deeper insight of how our water cleaning plant works:

To bottle water, you will obviously need a water tab! We will be selling the water for the price of 0,0008$/liter and are thereby 20% cheaper than the Ghana Water Company (GWC), the governmental water company. For the methods of payment we have two ideas in mind: The first one is a prepaid card, you can load money on it at your local kiosk. The other option is a system named “Mobile Money”, which is already very popular in Ghana. “Mobile Money” gives you the opportunity to pay via SMS for the water.

Microbes are very small organisms like bacteria, viruses and fungi, which are way too small to be seen with the human eye. So without us noticing they can live in our body, our food and also our drinking water. Usually this doesn’t pose a problem. But if there are certain types of microbes in large quantities this can lead to serious health issues. Microbes in drinking water cause diseases like dysentery, cholera or pontiac fever.³ That’s why VLOUW is researching UV-technology to destroy the lipid envelope of the microorganisms in the water. Thereby the microbes are deactivated and don’t pose any potential danger anymore.

“ENSURE AVAILABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION FOR ALL”
------------------------------------
This is a statement we can get behind! Clean water is a human right and in 2017 2.2 billion people worldwide still lacked access to drinking water. By 2030 the UN wants to improve the sanitation and water situation in developing countries and has formulated eight targets to achieve their goal. Even though we are not part of the UN, we have the same vision and want to join their efforts. The VLOUW project tries to contribute to the clean water supply, which falls especially under the UN targets 6.1 and 6.B.
------------------------------------
➡️ Target 6.1: By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all - We as Vlouw Project are developing a water plant which works with UV technology and a filtration system. This is very cost efficient and works fully without chlorine!

➡️ Target 6.B: Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management - It is very important for us that we work together with local communities to ensure their independence.

The water quality has been developed throughout the last years by the Ghanaian people and its government.

But especially in rural, further inland areas access to clean drinking water still needs to improve. Therefore the unsafe pipe system, only periodic availability of water, unsuitable private water storage, and contaminated wells are issues that need to be addressed.

We are sure, that the VLOUW-project and the Ghanaian people are able to do so together so that more opportunities will open up to the country and its people.

Ghana also provides a lot of opportunities for our social business to work out well. Its economic growth and its government, which works together with businesses and NGOs to improve the water quality around the country, are the main factors.
Large expertise from people like Melissa Opryszko, Baffour Osei Akoto, Frank Amoyaw, and many more only adds up to that.
