Vineyard work in June... fruit set and pruning.
Immediately after fruit set, pruning occurs, which involves cutting the tips of growing shoots - the tips and last leaves. This ancient traditional practice offers several benefits.
Pruning is part of the large family of "green pruning" procedures, which modify the plant's canopy. If done properly, they improve the vineyard's production and sustainability. Green pruning, in general, serves to keep the canopy within certain growth limits; otherwise, the vineyard would become difficult to navigate, with the risk of accidental shoot breakage. It also helps regulate the balance between vegetation and production. It is important for the vine to have sufficient canopy, relative to its environmental and production conditions, to accumulate sufficient energy in the form of sugars. However, it's not just a question of quantity: proper distribution among the various parts of the plant is also crucial for optimal ripening. Certain interventions also affect these energy balances. Furthermore, the canopy should not be excessive, for optimal exposure of the leaves and bunches (these, depending on the climatic conditions, sometimes need to be more exposed, sometimes more protected). Finally, excessively overgrown vegetation creates unfavorable, humid microenvironments that favor various diseases. Therefore, certain green pruning tasks also serve to prevent pathogen infections.
