One of Monteverde’s most remarkable features is its location along the Continental Divide, the mountain ridge that separates waters flowing toward the Pacific Ocean from those destined for the Caribbean Sea.

Here, at the crosswaters, a single landscape gives rise to two journeys. Some waters flow west toward the Pacific, while others travel east toward the Caribbean.

At SAVIA, this extraordinary geography reminds us that nature is interconnected in ways both visible and unseen. Every forest, watershed, and ecosystem forms part of a larger living network.

This tiny mushroom looks ready to report for duty, little hardhat and all!

Fungi truly earn their reputation as some of the forest’s hardest workers. Beneath them lies an intricate underground network recycling nutrients, nourishing roots, breaking down fallen matter, and helping the cloud forest regenerate.

Not all forest heroes tower above the canopy. Some are barely perceptible. At SAVIA, we invite guests to slow down in wonder and notice the tiny magic that surrounds us.

One nocturnal visitor at SAVIA has a particular love for the sweet zapote fruit and a habit of carrying snacks off into the forest for later… though “later” does not always go according to plan.

SAVIA’s forest immersions include a passage through our Sensory Garden, an invitation to slow down and reconnect with the living world.

Not all heavy metal comes from amplifiers.

High in Monteverde’s cloud forest, the Bellbird delivers a metallic call so sharp and resonant it cuts through the mist like a live forest concert. This threatened species is one of the region’s most iconic birds, and the male, with his three dangling wattles, is as visually striking as the sound of its call.
