The concept and purpose of the Smart Cities around the world is to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local area development and harnessing technology, especially technology that leads to Smart outcomes.

The Smart City concept is therefore being promoted by many high profile technology companies. Few, though, have real world experience of implementing Smart City infrastructure or applications in the Chinese Region.

Smart cities are no longer the wave of the future. They are here now and growing quickly as the Internet of Things (IoT) expands and impacts municipal services around the globe.

Smart cities are connected cities, and they work in conjunction with everything from IoT sensors to open data collection and smart streetlights to provide better services and better communication.

The concept is not static, there is no absolute definition of a smart city, no end point, but rather a process, or series of steps, by which cities become more ‘livable’ and resilient and, hence, able to respond quicker to new challenges.
