Global Hydropower Day
DATE:
*11/10/2025*

LOCATION:
EUROPE, AFRICA, EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC

TYPE:
*Global Hydropower Day on 11 October 2025* will celebrate the positive impacts of sustainable hydropower on people and communities around the world.

Spearheaded by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), with support from a coalition of developers, operators, manufacturers and industry associations around the world, this day will shine a light on the power that can be harnessed with sustainable hydropower.

Hydropower is the oldest form of renewable energy and has a key role to play alongside all forms of clean energy to push the world towards a net zero future.

Various videos, case studies, stories and more will be represented throughout the day, covering what can be achieved .

How can you get involved this year?

A day in the life of hydropower

We will be featuring videos of a normal day in hydropower plants. Have you already made one? If so, we would love to share it.

Celebrating hydropower heroes

We will be producing a video from across the hydropower sector that celebrates one person from the company and their critical role that makes hydropower possible. Would you like to contribute?

This video will shine a light on the critical people within the sector that keep the lights on. Any role is welcome.

A case study or inspirational story

Please send in any stories you're proud of or what you have accomplished in the last year. We would love to publicise your work and share these with the rest of the hydropower community.

HYDROPOWER IN CAMEROON.

Hydropower plays a significant role in Cameroon's energy sector, as the country has abundant water resources that can be harnessed for electricity generation. Cameroon has several hydropower plants that contribute to its electricity supply, with the potential for further development in the future.

Some key points about hydropower in Cameroon include:

1. Existing hydropower plants: Cameroon currently has several operational hydropower plants, including the Edea, Song Loulou, and Lagdo dams. These facilities generate a significant portion of the country's electricity supply.

2. Potential for development: Cameroon has vast untapped hydropower potential, with several sites identified for future development. The government has plans to increase its hydropower capacity to meet growing energy demand and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

3. Renewable energy source: Hydropower is a renewable energy source that is considered clean and sustainable, making it an attractive option for Cameroon's energy mix. It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on imported fuels.

4. Challenges: Despite the potential benefits of hydropower, there are challenges to overcome, such as environmental impacts, resettlement of communities, and financing constraints. Balancing the need for energy development with environmental and social considerations is crucial.

5. Regional cooperation: Cameroon is part of the Central African Power Pool (CAPP), a regional initiative aimed at promoting cross-border electricity trade and cooperation among Central African countries. This collaboration can help optimize hydropower resources and enhance energy security in the region.

Overall, hydropower plays a vital role in Cameroon's energy sector, and further development of this resource can contribute to the country's economic growth, energy security, and sustainability goals.
