Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited one of our programs in downtown Brooklyn this week. She met with AHRC NYC staff members, leaders including Marco Damiani, Lorelei Atalie Vargas, and Steve Towler, and three of our self-advocates, Chad DeRoche, Victor Carrion, and Elyssa Zeller. Senator Gillibrand listened intently to their concerns and issues, offering suggestions and ways to assist the causes closest to their hearts.

We are grateful to Senator Gillibrand for her continued support and advocacy for people with disabilities and the organizations that support their needs.

Our own Marco Damiani was featured on the "Let's Get to Work" podcast with Dr. Peter Blanck from Syracuse University's Burton Blatt Institute (BBI). Dr. Blanck and Marco discussed disability employment policy, the importance of self-advocacy, self-determination, and supported decision-making, and Marco's journey from direct support professional to nonprofit leadership.

Our colleagues at ANCOR American Network of Community Options and Resources are sharing information about Recognizing the Role of DSPs Act, which would create a unique Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) for DSPs within the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is scheduled next week to be marked up by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs. According to ANCOR, “A unique SOC for DSPs would help states and the federal government collect data on demographics and turnover rates. This, in turn, will help inform policies to address the workforce shortage.”

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrates its 36th anniversary today. The ADA makes discrimination on the basis of disability illegal and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities. It allows people like Christian Gordon to thrive in his job at Barnes & Noble, where he has worked for more than a decade.

In a time when the protections enshrined by the ADA are threatened, we fully commit to upholding its promise and purpose.

We re-opened our 10th Street residence in Astoria after it received much needed renovations, allowing us to continue providing a community-based home for people with disabilities in one of Queen's most vibrant neighborhoods. Thank you to Senator Kristen Gonzalez for joining us for the ribbon cutting and for her continued support of our programs and services.
