The members of the Yarmouth Fire Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the members of the Bridgetown Fire Department, as well as Firefighter Uichitaโ€™s family, friends, and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.

The fire service is a brotherhood and sisterhood built on courage, sacrifice, and unwavering service to others. Today, we stand alongside Bridgetown in mourning the loss of one of their own, a firefighter who answered the call to protect their community.

Please keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult loss.

Rest easy, Firefighter Uichita. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten

This week, weโ€™re proud to recognize one of our newest and youngest members โ€” ๐‘๐ฒ๐ฅ๐š๐ง ๐‹๐ž๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐œ ๐Ÿ‘

Rylan joined the fire service in 2025, turning a lifelong dream into reality. Ever since he was a kid, heโ€™s wanted to become a firefighter and now heโ€™s proud to be serving his community.

What Rylan enjoys most about being part of the department is learning new things during training nights, constantly building his skills and knowledge. Even early in his career, one of his most rewarding experiences has been helping people he doesnโ€™t know, showing the impact firefighters can have on their community.

Rylan points out that something the public might not always realize is the many hours of training firefighters put in to improve and be ready for any situation.

What keeps him motivated is simple but powerful โ€” knowing heโ€™s helping others.

Outside of the hall, Rylan enjoys playing hockey, working out, and spending time at home.

Weโ€™re excited to have Rylan as part of our team and look forward to watching his journey in the fire service grow. Welcome aboard and thank you for stepping up to serve! ๐Ÿš’

Ricky joined the fire service in Ontario in 2019, driven by a desire to be there for his community when they need a hand. He later joined the Yarmouth Fire Department in September 2024, bringing valuable experience with him.

What he enjoys most about being part of the department is that everyone is approachable, creating a supportive and welcoming team environment. Ricky says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is simply being able to step into any situation and lend a hand where itโ€™s needed.

He also shares that something the public might not realize is the many small details that make up the fire service, and just how much goes into being a firefighter, something he found both eye-opening and humbling.

Ricky stays motivated by his desire to keep learning and being part of a team that is committed to training and improving together.

Outside of the hall, Ricky works building roofs, decks, and fences. His hobbies have evolved from demolition derby to spending more time with his farm animals. He is supported by his wife, Katelin, and their children Kinley, Rowan, Callum, and Ellie-Anne.

Thank you, Ricky, for your dedication and continued service to our department and community! ๐Ÿš’

Mitchell joined the fire service in 2021, continuing a family tradition in firefighting. Inspired by his familyโ€™s legacy, including the Rodgerson name in the Yarmouth fire service and his father serving as Chief of the Havelock Fire Department, Mitchell carries on that commitment to serving others.

What Mitchell enjoys most about being part of the department is helping the community, something that continues to drive his passion for the role. One of his most rewarding experiences so far has been assisting with two major forest fires in Nova Scotia, where he made a meaningful impact in critical situations.

Mitchell also highlights that something the public may not realize is that anyone can become a firefighter, and he encourages anyone interested to reach out and get involved.

He stays motivated by both the community he serves and the strong bond with his fellow firefighters.

Outside of the hall, Mitchell works as a bus driver and enjoys staying active with softball, basketball, and trapping. He is supported by his wife, Annette Smith-Rodgerson, and their daughter, Bailey Smith.

Thank you, Mitchell, for your dedication and service to our department and community! ๐Ÿš’

Weโ€™re proud to kick off our new Firefighter Spotlight feature by recognizing one of our dedicated senior members:

Roger joined the fire service in 1981, bringing with him an incredible ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ“ ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž to our department and community. His journey into the fire service was inspired by the support firefighters gave his family during difficult times, and that sense of helping others has stayed with him ever since.

What Roger values most about being part of the department is the friendship and camaraderie among members. Over the years, one of his most rewarding experiences has been simply being there for people when they need it most. He also reminds us that what the public may not always see is the countless hours of training firefighters put in to ensure they can do the job safely and return home to their families.

Roger stays motivated by his passion for helping others and his ability to drive and operate much of our equipment, making him a valuable and experienced member of the team.

Outside of the hall, Roger is a retired heavy truck mechanic who enjoys jigsaw puzzles, camping, and sharing his knowledge with newer members. He also notes that his wife and family are very proud of the work he does โ€” and rightly so.

A fun fact about Roger? He simply enjoys being around people and having a good time โ€” something that shows in the strong relationships heโ€™s built over the years.

Thank you, Roger, for your decades of dedication, experience, and commitment to our department and community. ๐Ÿš’

The Yarmouth Volunteer Fire Department Association is proud to donate thermal imaging cameras to the department. An essential tool that will greatly support our firefighters in keeping our community safe.

These cameras were made possible entirely through fundraising efforts, including events hosted in our hall such as weddings and special occasions. Every celebration held in our space helps turn meaningful moments into vital equipment for our fire department.

We want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who chooses to host their special events with us. Your support gives us the opportunity to raise funds for tools that truly make a difference.

A huge thank you as well to our dedicated volunteer members who give their time and energy to work these events. Your commitment behind the scenes is what makes donations like this possible.

Community support + volunteer dedication = lifesaving equipment.
Thank you for standing with us โค๏ธ๐Ÿš’

Help Keep Fire Hydrants Clear โ„๏ธ๐Ÿš’

After multiple snowfall events in a short period of time, many fire hydrants around Yarmouth may be buried or difficult to see.

We want to share an important reminder with the community: clear access to hydrants is critical during an emergency. Quick access can save valuable time and that time can make a real difference for lives and property.

Residents are encouraged to help by clearing hydrants near their homes if they can do so safely!

If youโ€™re able to clear a hydrant:
โœ” Clear a path from the street
โœ” Clear about 3 feet (1 metre) around the hydrant on all sides
โœ” Make sure itโ€™s visible from the road

It may not officially be your responsibility but your help can make a big difference in an emergency and help keep our community safer.

Thank you for looking out for one another, Yarmouth โค๏ธ
