SIGN THE PETITION: END THE SECOND-GENERATION CUT-OFF RULE

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is encouraging citizens, and anyone impacted by the second-generation cut-off rule, to sign a petition calling on Parliament to adopt Bill S-2: An Act to amend the Indian Act (new registration entitlements) as amended by the Senate.

Join the more than 3400 people who have already signed the petition, before it closes on April 2, 2026.

Sharon McIvor from Vancouver, British Columbia initiated this petition while Member of Parliament Luci Idlout from Nunavut is sponsoring it, so it can be presented in Parliament.

In December 2025, the Senate of Canada unanimously passed changes to Bill S-2 that would remove the second-generation cut-off and the 1985 cut-off in the "Indian Act," and return to a one-parent rule for passing on status.

First Nations leaders, organizations, and families have called for these changes for decades.

Now, the House of Commons must act.

✍️ Sign the petition to help call on Parliament to pass Bill S-2 without delay: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7200

On behalf of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Youth Council, we proudly congratulate our Youth Councillor, Tyshaundrea Desjarlais, on being selected for the 2026 Miss Indigenous Canada program.

Tyshaundrea’s selection is a testament to her leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to uplifting our people. As one of only 20 applicants chosen through a competitive process, she continues to demonstrate the strength, intelligence, and cultural pride that define Indigenous youth leadership today.

Since being elected to the SCO Youth Council in 2025, Tyshaundrea has represented our Nations with integrity and heart. Her advocacy for those experiencing poverty, housing insecurity, and social isolation reflects her deep compassion and her drive to create meaningful change within our communities. Through her academic journey in the Arts and Education program at Brandon University and her service on the Board of Directors for the Brandon Friendship Centre, she continues to lead both in word and in action.

The Miss Indigenous Canada program embodies leadership, cultural connection, empowerment, and authentic representation values that Tyshaundrea carries naturally. We have full confidence that she will use this platform to amplify the voices of First Nations youth across Turtle Island.

The SCO Youth Council stands proudly beside Tyshaundrea as she steps into this next chapter. Your leadership inspires us all.

Miigwetch and congratulations, Councillor Desjarlais , we are proud of you !!

On behalf of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Youth Council, we extend our sincere appreciation to the Keewatinook Fishers of Lake Winnipeg Inc. for hosting the gathering, “Our Fish, Our Food, Our Way of Life.”

We are proud to share that SCO Youth Councillor Dion Traverse hosted and represented the Youth Council at this important event, creating space to ensure youth voices were present in critical discussions surrounding our fisheries and waters. SCO Youth Chief Bill Bird attended in support of Councillor Traverse and in solidarity with the work being carried forward on behalf of our Nations.

Throughout the gathering, discussions focused on the health and sustainability of the Lake Winnipeg watershed, the protection of our fisheries, environmental stewardship, food sovereignty, and the preservation of our traditional ways of life. Leaders and knowledge keepers emphasized the importance of safeguarding treaty and inherent rights, strengthening collaboration between Nations, and ensuring youth are actively involved in future environmental and policy decision-making processes.

As youth leaders, we understand that protecting our waters is directly tied to our identity, culture, and future generations. The SCO Youth Council remains committed to advocating for responsible stewardship, meaningful youth engagement, and the protection of our fisheries for years to come.

Miigwetch to the organizers, leadership, and all who contributed their voices and vision. Together, we continue the work of protecting our lands, waters, and way of life.
