On behalf of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Youth Council, we extend our sincere appreciation to the Keewatinook Fishers of Lake Winnipeg Inc. for hosting the gathering, “Our Fish, Our Food, Our Way of Life.”
We are proud to share that SCO Youth Councillor Dion Traverse hosted and represented the Youth Council at this important event, creating space to ensure youth voices were present in critical discussions surrounding our fisheries and waters. SCO Youth Chief Bill Bird attended in support of Councillor Traverse and in solidarity with the work being carried forward on behalf of our Nations.
Throughout the gathering, discussions focused on the health and sustainability of the Lake Winnipeg watershed, the protection of our fisheries, environmental stewardship, food sovereignty, and the preservation of our traditional ways of life. Leaders and knowledge keepers emphasized the importance of safeguarding treaty and inherent rights, strengthening collaboration between Nations, and ensuring youth are actively involved in future environmental and policy decision-making processes.
As youth leaders, we understand that protecting our waters is directly tied to our identity, culture, and future generations. The SCO Youth Council remains committed to advocating for responsible stewardship, meaningful youth engagement, and the protection of our fisheries for years to come.
Miigwetch to the organizers, leadership, and all who contributed their voices and vision. Together, we continue the work of protecting our lands, waters, and way of life.
