Brazil: an Indigenous leader was killed in violent attacks against Guarani Kaiowá communities ⚠️

Two Indigenous Guarani Kaiowá communities who took back their stolen land have been violently attacked in recent weeks.

Givaldo Santos Guarani Kaiowá, a leader at the Taquaperi Reserve, was approached at gunpoint by two men on a motorcycle, who shot him in the head. Witnesses say he died at the scene.

In recent decades, almost all of the Guarani Kaiowá lands have been stolen for cattle and agribusiness.

When the Guarani Kaiowá try to recover their lands, they’re met with brutal and often deadly attacks. Ranchers who occupy their lands pay gunmen and sometimes pressure local police to violently evict the Indigenous people.

🗣️ This violence must end. We’re pressuring the Brazilian government, demanding an end to the violence against the Guarani Kaiowá. Their lands must be demarcated now.
