Residents in Bruce County may be experiencing issues when calling 9-1-1 from a landline, resulting in a busy signal.

An outage is affecting Bell Canada and local phone providers using Bell services. Calls to 9-1-1 from cell phones are not impacted at this time.

If you find you don't have the ability to make a call to 9-1-1:

1️⃣Try another phone service: If your landline is not connecting, try a cell phone.

2️⃣Seek help from a neighbour: Your neighbour may be able to help connect you with 9-1-1.

Be prepared to provide full location details, including your address, fire number, house number and nearest intersection.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT – WINTER CONDITIONS

Tuesday, December 23rd 2025

Environment Canada has issued a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT for our area, including the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation community. Winter weather may bring heavy snow, reduced visibility, strong winds, icy roads, and potential power outages.

CNFD encourages all community members to take the following steps to stay safe:

❄️ Prepare for Possible Power (Hydro) Outages
• Keep flashlights and extra batteries readily available
• Charge phones, medical devices, and backup power banks
• Have extra blankets, warm clothing, food, and water on hand
• Check on elders, neighbours, and those who may need assistance

🔥 Safe Heating Practices
• Use approved heating devices only
• Never use BBQs, propane heaters, or generators indoors
• Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are working
• Keep heaters at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn

🚗 Travel With Caution
• Avoid unnecessary travel during poor conditions
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle

12 Days of Holiday Safety | Day 8

Holiday Safety starts with having a HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN.

Fire doesn't wait - and neither should we.
Every year, too many Ontario families face house fires with no escape plan. In those frantic moments, every second counts. The danger is real, but preventable. Communities across Ontario are making escape planning a household priority. A home fire escape plan is simple - and can mean the difference between life and death.

- Identify two exits from every room.
- Determine who will be responsible for helping young children, older adults or anyone else that may need assistance.
- Choose a safe meeting spot outside, like a tree or lamp post across the street.
- Once out, stay out.
- Call 9-1-1 from outside of the home.
- Practice the plan with everyone in your household at least twice a year. Practice at night and during the daytime.
- Review your plan every year.

When the smoke alarm sounds, there's no time to plan - only time to act. Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let's keep Ontario safe - together.

🚨SMOKE & CO ALARMS SAVE LIVES🚨

The risk of fire and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning exists year-round - but more prominent during the winter months with use of heating appliances such as furnaces, space heaters, and fuel-burning equipment.

🔥Protect your home and family:
✔️Test SMOKE and CO alarms/detectors WEEKLY
✔️Replace batteries ANNUALLY
✔️Replace alarm units EVERY 10 YEARS

🚨If an alarm sounds:
➡️Evacuate Immediately
➡️Call 9-1-1
Remember: CO is odourless, tasteless, and you cannot see it. Evacuate and call even if you believe it is a false-alarm.

📍Ontario Requirements (Effective January 1, 2026)
- CO alarms are required on EVERY STOREY of the home, including basements and attics (even without bedrooms)
- CO alarms must be installed outside each sleeping area
- Smoke alarms are required on every story and outside sleeping areas
- NEWER or RECENTLY renevated homes require smoke alarms with visual STROBES in each bedroom/sleeping area.

⏰ Take a few minutes today to check your alarms - it could save a life.

12 Days of Holiday Safety | Day 7

Holiday Safety starts with SAFE FAMILIES IN THE KITCHEN.

Little hands (or paws!) and holiday heat don't belong together - keep kids safe while you cook. That's why communities across Ontario are empowering adults to protect little ones.

- Show kids how to stay one metre (three feet) away from stoves and ovens.
- Explain why hot surfaces can cause burns.
- Assign safe tasks like mixing or decorating. Supervise kids in the kitchen closely.
- Turn pot handles inward when pots are on the stove so they can not be easily knocked or pulled off the stove.
- Make sure electrical cords are not dangling from countertops, where they could be pulled by small children or pets.
- Cool a burn by running cool water over the wound for 3 to 5 minutes. If the burn is severe, seek medical attention.

The holidays should leave warm memories - not lasting injuries. Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let's keep Ontario safe - together.
