Canadians serving in Vietnam with the Canadian Forces.

We were there, most folks aren't aware of that these days but we did in fact take part in two separate missions during the war throughout Indo China.

The first was the ICSC - International Commission for Supervision and Control Indo- China.

The ICSC Cambodia monitored the Geneva Accords and helped the Khmer resistance forces disband and return home and the Viet Minh to leave the country. Much of the work was done from 1954 to 1955, and Canada had only token representation after 1958. The commission withdrew completely in 1969.

The medal is awarded for 90 days cumulative service between 7 August 1954 to 15 June 1974.

Sadly during this mission 2 Canadians were lost in a plane crash and are still missing today.

Sgt James Sylvester Byrne CD, RCASC
Cpl Vernon Perkin, Black Watch

John Turner, A diplomat was also on board when the plane went down.

The Second mission was The International Commission of Control and Supervision - ICCS.

The 1,160 personnel of the commission were from Canada, Hungary, Indonesia, and Poland. Their role was to monitor the cease-fire in South Vietnam as per the Paris Peace Conference. The Commission arranged the release and exchange of more than 32,000 prisoners of war.

The medal is awarded for 90 days cumulative service between 28 January 1973 to 30 April 1975.

One Canadian was lost during this mission.

Capt Charles Laviolette, CD, 12e Régiment blindé du Canada

Both missions also now qualify for the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. So go check your loved one's medals and verify if they have received it.

I would love to speak with any of the descendants if anyone knows them. There are some honours a few of them may be owed.

The down side to the Operational Service Medals is that many of the represent a wide variety of service.

For example the OSM Expedition on the left in the photo can cover from Op Caribbe in the Navy to deployments in Libya and Lebanon and beyond.

It is more expedient as far as getting a medal on the chests of those that earned them, and I say that hesitantly knowing the ongoing issues out there but I do miss the days of distinct ribbons for each mission.

Anyway, any of you sailors and air crew that have not received their medal for Op Caribbe please reach out. Rotation bars also pertain to this medal.

We recently had the privilege of updating a client's medal group following their appointment as a Member of the Order of Military Merit (MMM). Their group is now mounted, updated, and ready for wear.

Pilot Officer Andre Hisette was serving with the attached to 51 Squadron RAF when on January 16th, 1945 his aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter.

He is buried in Becklingen war cemetery in Germany. It is located between Hamburg and Hannover.

His family just received his B0mber Command bar for his service during WW2.

So many of our young men are buried all across northwest Europe and so many more have never been found, likely never to be.

We owe them the respect of ensuring they are never forgotten. These bars for the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal are just one more way we can live up to the promise.

We will remember them.
