The question of when the universe began is answered differently depending on whether you are looking at it through the lens of modern science or ancient Vedic philosophy.
1. Scientific Perspective (The Big Bang)
According to modern cosmology and data from missions like the Planck satellite, the universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old.
* The Event: It started from an extremely hot, dense point (a singularity) and has been expanding ever since.
* Evidence: This age is calculated by measuring the expansion rate of the universe (the Hubble Constant) and studying the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, which is the "afterglow" of the Big Bang.
2. Vedic/Hindu Perspective (Cosmic Cycles)
In Hindu cosmology, time is not linear but cyclical. The creation and destruction of the universe are governed by the life of Brahma.
* The Kalpa: One day in the life of Brahma is called a Kalpa, which lasts 4.32 billion years. A night is of equal length.
* Current Timeline: According to these calculations, the current universe is in the first day of the 51st year of the current Brahma.
* Total Age: This suggests the current cycle of creation began roughly 155 trillion years ago, though we are currently in a specific Yuga (Kali Yuga) within a much larger cycle.
Comparison Table
| Feature | Modern Science | Vedic Philosophy |
|---|---|---|
| Age of Universe | ~13.8 Billion Years | ~155 Trillion Years (Current Cycle) |
| Nature of Time | Linear (starts at Big Bang) | Cyclical (Infinite births/deaths) |
| Current Stage | Accelerated Expansion | Kali Yuga (Iron Age) |
