1 day. 1 goal. More families đź«‚

BCSS Giving Day is just a few weeks away. We have one thing on our minds: how do we reach more families?

Throughout the province, families are caring for loved ones with schizophrenia or other severe and persistent mental illness without the support they need. At BC Schizophrenia Society, we provide these families with education, support, and a community that truly understands.

On June 24th, we're asking our community to help us raise $10,000 in the hopes of helping more families.

When a tragedy happens, how often do you see mental illness mentioned in the very first sentence? 💭 As CBC journalist and professor Kathryn Gretsinger points out, defaulting to impressions instead of solid evidence creates false narratives that can do real harm—especially to people living with serious mental illness.

In our Season 6 finale of Look Again, we’re pulling back the curtain on media ethics and the power of the press. It’s a must-hear conversation about moving away from clickbait and moving toward trauma-informed, human-first storytelling.

Last month, we invited members of our community to share creative works reflecting their connections to mental illness, caregiving, and hope for Schizophrenia & Psychosis Awareness Day.

From paintings and poetry to photography and mixed media, artists from across the province and around Canada offered something deeply personal: their stories, their resilience, their truth.

We are honoured to share this collection đź’ś A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed.

Caregiving for a loved one with a severe and persistent mental illness can leave little room for anything else, including yourself.

In our latest season of our Look Again podcast, we spoke with art therapist and counsellor Nicole Parekh about why creativity isn't a talent—it's a way of engaging with the world that's available to all of us, even in the hardest seasons. She shared some simple art activities to try at home as a small act of care for yourself.

There's no right or wrong way to engage. The focus is on the process, not the result.

How does the media shape what you think about mental illness—especially schizophrenia? 🧠

In our final episode of Look Again Season 6, we talk with CBC journalist and professor Kathryn Gretsinger. She challenges us to think critically about the stories we consume and produce. We examine how traditional reporting can accidentally cause harm, and how a shift toward trauma-informed journalism can change the narrative entirely.

Save the date for BCSS Giving Day: June 24, 2026!

BCSS's 2nd Annual Giving Day is a meaningful celebration of generosity and community. Severe and persistent mental illness, such as schizophrenia, doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It changes everything for their family and loved ones, too.

We walk with these families every step of the way, but many haven't found us yet. Help us raise $10,000 so we can reach more families across BC.

Together, we can make sure no family faces this alone đź’ś

In this episode of Look Again Season 6, we sit down with Allan Brooks to explore a highly misunderstood side of AI (artificial intelligence). Allan shares his lived experience of how interacting with artificial intelligence can rapidly escalate into a severe psychological crisis by validating and reinforcing delusional thinking.

This conversation isn’t about fearing technology—it’s about demanding awareness, critical thinking, and guardrails in an increasingly AI-driven world.

As Allan explains in the latest episode of our Look Again podcast, one of the most dangerous elements of this tech-triggered crisis was how the AI handled his doubts. Instead of grounding him when he asked for clarity, the system sidestepped his questions, validating and escalating the delusion.

This powerful episode pulls back the curtain on a critical tech-safety gap that clinicians, families, and developers need to face immediately.
