Thornton Creek Hatchery

Thornton Creek Hatchery Support this salmon enhancement project in Ucluelet, on Vancouver Island. Last spring Thornton Creek released over 500, 000 Chinook and around 600, 000 Chum.

The Thornton Creek Hatchery harvests eggs from returning salmon as they are about to spawn in the creek, or other waterways the hatchery works in. Then they take the eggs back to the hatchery, fertilize and incubate, hatch and raise them, and then release them back into the wild. Coho is raised in holding tanks for a year and around 50,000 are released in April/May. They will continue to release s

almon into particular water systems until its number of returning salmon increases to a healthy level and it is able to sustain itself. Then they move on and enhance another system.

We are excited to announce that Thornton Creek Hatchery will be OPEN for wildlife viewing during this years salmon run! Opening hours are from 10am to 3pm. To be able to stay open as much as possible we are looking for volunteers to help guide our visitors. Opening up the hatchery to the public is an important part of our society’s mission by creating a rich educational experience for locals, families and tourists. We are looking for people who can volunteer once or twice a week starting as soon as possible until mid-November. Keen individuals will have the opportunity to learn more about salmon, meet people from all around the world, and see some wildlife. If you are interested please email us at: [email protected] or message us on Instagram.

Last month we had an excellent day at the river with our volunteers, board members, and staff! These folks work hard year-round, so celebrating with a swim and a snack was very well deserved.

We wanted to give a huge shout out to Tofino Brew Co., Picnic Charcuterie, Gaia Grocery, and Adrianna's for making the day extra yummy.

TCES would like to give a very special shout-out to Jeremy Riley for his generosity to our society!

All of the gutters on the hatchery building were damaged in the snow storm we experienced a few weeks ago, and today Jeremy donated materials and his time to completely refit our facility. Many thanks to you for this incredible donation Jeremy - we are very grateful for your excellent work!

The Thornton Creek Enhancement Society would like to send out a huge Thank You To Cermaq for supporting our WCVI Juvenile Chinook Survival and Release Strategy Project with a $1,000 donation!

This study is an exciting partnership with Tom Balfour of Central Westcoast Forest Society, Toquaht Nation, DFO, BC Conservation Foundation, Clayoquot Biosphere Trust and the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Tom is doing his Master’s Program on this study and Tom and TCES will co-publish a paper on our findings.

We also look forward to an in-kind consultation visit from Cermaq’s manager of Fresh Water Operations to advise on some upgrades to our facility. Thanks to Janice Valant for assisting and thanks to the Cermaq organization for supporting this research!

Work on our West Coast Vancouver Island Juvenile Chinook Survival and Release Strategy research project has been in the works the past few months and the final plan is taking shape. None of this work would be possible without the support of two fantastic organizations. The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust (CBT) selected our project application for the Biosphere Research Award which provides funding of $20,000! The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) has also supported this project with a grant of $12,000!

Thornton Creek Hatchery, on behalf of our partners Tom Balfour of Central Westcoast Forest Society, Toquaht Nation and DFO, would like to send a big shout out of gratitude to CBT and PSF for these leadership donations!
