Did you know that May is Invasive Species Action Month? 🪳

Invasive species are non-native plants, animals, insects, and pathogens that threaten the balance of ecosystems. ⚖️🦠 Non-native species can drastically harm the environment, the economy, and human health. 🤒

Here are some common culprits that spread non-native species:
🪵 Burning and moving non-local firewood
🐕‍🦺 Pets and people wandering off trail 👣
🚤 Boats and inflatable floaties
🥾 Dirt-packed footwear, vehicles, clothes, and camping gear
🪱 Parasites within live fishing bait

Help prevent the spread of invasive species by cleaning debris off shoes and equipment, 🧼 staying on marked trails, burning local firewood, and leaving the live bait at home.

Happy World Turtle Day to all who shell-ebrate! 🐢🎉

Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park are home to two fascinating turtle species. The painted turtle and the snapping turtle are key in shaping the ecosystem around them.🌱

With nesting season upon us, 🪺 turtles will begin crossing roads in search of food, nesting sites, or mates.

Help keep these species at risk safe by slowing down and keeping your eyes 👀 peeled for turtles on the road, big and small.

🥾 Black Bear Safety Tips for Hikers 🐻
Makwa (Black bears in Anishinaabemowin) live throughout the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula and are becoming more active this season. Black bears are usually shy and avoid people, but it’s important to be prepared while hiking.
Before and during your hike:
🔹 Keep dogs on a leash to prevent provoking wildlife
🔹 Travel in groups and make noise as you hike—talk, clap, or use a whistle
🔹 Watch for fresh bear signs such as droppings, overturned rocks, or torn‑up logs
If you encounter a black bear:
• Stay calm and speak in a firm, calm voice
• Wave your arms slowly to appear larger
• Avoid direct eye contact and give the bear plenty of space
• Back away slowly—do not run or drop your backpack
Staying alert and respecting wildlife helps protect both visitors and Makwa. Enjoy the trails safely! 🌲🐾

Bears are out! 🐻
Spring brings big changes to the landscape on the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula, and to wildlife too. Makwa (Black bears in Anishinaabemowin) are becoming active as they emerge from their dens and begin searching for food.
As a visitor, you play an important role in helping keep bears wild and people safe. Please do your part by following these bear‑safe practices:
• Never leave food or other wildlife attractants unattended
• Place all garbage and recycling in proper bear‑proof bins
• Slow down when travelling park roads — bears may be on or near roadways
Keeping a clean campsite and picnic area is one of the most effective ways to prevent wildlife becoming food-conditioned. Learn more about bare camping and food storage best practices here:

Being bear-aware helps protect Makwa and ensures everyone can safely enjoy Bruce Peninsula National Park this spring.
