Do you know what the WUI is? 🌳

The Wildland Urban Interface is the area where human development and the natural environment meet.

Why is the WUI important?

As our communities and lifestyles increasingly extend further into forested areas, we become more exposed to the negative impacts of wildland fire.

The good news is that it is possible to live safely with fire on the landscape.

The FireSmart BC Wildfire Mitigation Program is a free, voluntary initiative that helps residents reduce their wildfire risk and strengthen the resilience of their homes. Through the program, a trained FireSmart professional conducts a home and property assessment and provides practical properties specific recommendations to help homeowners better prepare for a wildfire. By taking simple mitigation steps around homes and structures, residence can significantly improve safety and contribute to building a more wildfire resilient community.

Another FireSmart Recognized Neighbourhood in Sun Peaks!

The Sun Peaks FireSmart team is excited to share that Sun Mountain Villas has officially become a FireSmart Canada Recognized Neighbourhood!

Earlier this spring, Sun Mountain Villas residents came together for a neighbourhood clean-up event. With strong participation and shared effort, the community completed key mitigation work, including:
• Pruning coniferous tree branches up to 2 metres (or 1/3 of total tree height)
• Removing trees located within the Immediate Zone (0–1.5 m from structures)

This collective effort highlights what can be achieved when neighbours work together to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen community resilience. 🌲
