🐻 Do Your Part to Keep Bears and the Community Safe!

Fall brings a significant increase in bear activity here in Sun Peaks. We all have an important role to play in managing attractants and minimizing human-bear conflicts.

Please remember that Solid Waste and Control of Wildlife Attractant Bylaw No. 0193 2022 prohibits the improper storage and disposal of any wildlife attractants. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $500.

⚠️ Note: Attractants aren't just food and garbage! They also include gas cans (jerry cans), antifreeze, and oil containers. All of these items must be stored securely where bears cannot access them.

Let's work together to keep our community safe and our wildlife wild.

Learn more about the regulations on the Municipality's bylaw page: https://sunpeaks.civicweb.net/filepro/documents/?expanded=556,562&preview=34298

Speed bump installation has been completed on Fairways, Burfield, Mountainview and Sundance Dr. They have traffic delineator posts on either side which include reflective tape. Permanent signage will be installed in September when the parts arrive. Please continue to drive with caution as we do our best to support traffic calming measures, particularly on residential streets.

Welcome home team!

Welcome home team!

This morning, Bush Truck 1 returned safely with the crew of three who deployed on Sunday for the fourth consecutive deployment to the Pear Lake Fire since July 18.

Over the course of 40 days, Bush Truck 1 logged more than 8,550 kilometres. To put that into perspective, it would normally take approximately five years to accumulate that many kilometres. Many of those kilometers were over rough dirt roads it doesn't travel that often. So over the coming weeks, the truck will receive some well-deserved maintenance and attention to return it to top condition. In the meantime, our other apparatus will continue to respond to calls while Bush Truck 1 undergoes servicing and is prepared for full operational status once again.

Sun Peaks Fire Rescue greatly appreciates the sacrifices made by these crew members, who spent extended periods away from home and their families to assist communities in need. We would also like to extend a huge round of applause to the rest of our team, who stepped up to respond to calls and maintain service levels while members were deployed.

We would also like to recognize our Work Experience Program participants, who helped clean out Bush Truck 1 today. Every compartment and the entire cab were coated in a heavy layer of dirt and dust, but they worked diligently to restore it to a condition even better than when it left.

This deployment was, by far, the longest in our department's history. The experience and knowledge gained by our personnel will be invaluable in shaping future training opportunities and preparing for future deployments.

Welcome home Bush Truck 1!

Thurber Engineering’s pavement engineering team is carrying out Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing to assess pavement structural condition along multiple roads within Sun Peaks. (Please see attached drawing for the alignment.)

The testing vehicle will be travelling slowly and making frequent stops while measurements are collected. Please use caution when approaching and passing and follow any traffic control in place.

This work will take place Thursday, August 27th between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Please note that water restrictions within Sun Peaks have been raised to “Stage 2”.

What does this mean for me?

Garden irrigation:

Houses addresses with even numbers can only use irrigation/sprinklers on Wednesdays
Houses addresses with odd numbers can only use irrigation/sprinklers on Tuesdays
For strata complexes, use your individual unit number within your strata street address to determine if yours is odd or even
Only use irrigation before 11:00am or after 6:00pm
Hand-held hoses and watering cans can be used any day of the week (do not leave hoses running unattended)

Hot tubs / pools:
You can still fill/top-up your tubs and pools as required

Car washing:
Washing your vehicles is still allowed. Using a bucket and sponge (rather than a hose) is highly recommended. Or even better – leave the car dirty!

Please do all you can to conserve water through the remainder of the drier months. This water restriction will be updated as circumstances dictate.
