Shirley Sunday Market

Shirley Sunday Market Supporting local vendors from East Sooke to Port Renfrew. Runs every Sunday in summer. 11am-3pm. Since 2012, Shirley Market has been a fixture in the community.

We operate every Sunday from 11-3pm between June and September. There is live music and hot food and friendly vendors with diverse products all from our community! The market is held at the Shirley Community Hall, 2795 Sheringham Pt. Road, on the lovely open lawn, off West Coast Road just before French Beach Provincial Park.

Quilters, knitters and market vendors joined together, some inside the Hall and some outside and around! Come to enjoy!

Our volunteer social media manager was away for our final market of the year but we can’t close out the season without some reflection from the final market.

Thanks to we have this photo from the final market. Our wonderful Vivi and Susan, who are some of the kindest people you’ll meet and who organise the Shirley Sunday Market to make it happen, coordinate all of the people, and who regularly check on every person to make sure they are doing ok and have everything they need.

Thank you to these two and all of our volunteers, vendors, musicians, community members, and visitors who make our little community a vibrant and inclusive hub to gather in every week.

And thanks for the end of season cake 🍰 every year 😎

Hard to believe that this is it: the last Shirley Sunday Market of the year 🥹 What a summer it’s been, and we’re going to end with an eclectic mix of musicians: Rust Owl, Charlie K, and the MJWilson Trio will have music going all day. And maybe some surprises after! It will be a great way to bring an incredible summer to a close 🎶

Feature Vendor: Sydnie Johnson Art

Sydnie is a new artist to the market this season and has been wowing customers with her ceramic art. Here's what Sydnie said about her process, work, and inspiration:

"I am fascinated by the interconnectivity and repeating patterns in nature. Looking at the cellular level, I take plants, slice them into sections, stain the cells, view them through a microscope, and photograph their cellular structures. I use these photographs to interpret the cellular patterns into ceramic form. On a broader spectrum, I am mindful of raw materials' impact. They are a limited resource with ecological and human rights consequences associated with their mining. Thus, I use upcycled glaze as a base for my work. From there, the forms and cellular patterns delve into the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the beauty of nature."

This year for Shirley Day the community hall will be filled - from 10am to 4pm - with all the non-profit groups who offer services to Shirley residents that help enrich our rural life style.

Do drop by and discover all the wonderful free events held at our hall — like the monthly Lunch and Learn talks hosted by the Sooke Region Communities Health Network (SRCHN) - along with the always popular chair exercises offered weekly.

Find out what to do in an emergency from the Emergency Program Co-ordinator for Juan de Fuca - Jeri Grant.

The Lighthouse Society will be present with info on the historic lighthouse and fun fundraising items to purchase.

Learn about all the local charities that the Sooke and Juan de Fuca Health Foundation support with their donations.

OPSRRA will be present to address any concerns about community development and shared issues like road safety and cell service etc.

Leslie Ann Bent will be there with tables of books and puzzles for sale by donation to Diabetes Canada.

Come out and meet the Shirley Quilters, the longest running group that uses the community hall.

Lloyd Bowcott will be there to demonstrate letter press printing - and will have more of the vintage wooden letter trays for sale that collectors snap up each year.

And the Shirley Community Association will have a limited number of Coronation Oak tree seedlings for sale from our historic oak tree planted just outside the hall (history in the 2nd slide, as we couldn’t fit it all in the caption!)

Hope to see everyone on Sunday August 17th from 10am to 4pm to celebrate this year’s Shirley Day with fun activities inside and outside the Community Hall.

Please join us for a day of music, kids games, creative market vendors, food and the Shirley Volunteer Fire Department trucks on display!
