At the SPF‑2026 ECOP Mentoring Event this week, early‑career scientists had the opportunity to connect with mentors from diverse geographic regions, research disciplines, and career paths. The event generated productive discussions and strong interest, with approximately 70 conference participants—including both mentors and mentees—attending. Mentors included members of the symposium’s organizing and scientific steering committees, plenary and invited speakers, as well as topic session and workshop conveners.

🌊🐟 This week at SPF‑2026 in La Paz, Mexico 🌎
Scientists and fisheries managers from around the world are gathering for the international symposium “Navigating Changes in Small Pelagic Fish and Forage Communities: Climate, Ecosystems, and Sustainable Fisheries (SPF‑2026)”.

Small pelagic fish—such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel—account for over 30% of the global fish catch, making them essential to food security, livelihoods, and healthy marine ecosystems. Understanding how these species respond to environmental variability is critical for sustainable fisheries management.

Building on two previous symposia, SPF‑2026 provides a vital forum to share the latest science on forage fish ecology, explore links between climate and ecosystems, and translate research into better-informed decision‑making for the future of these fisheries.

Looking forward to a week of engaging discussions and new connections!
