This August, Prairie Firelines features Dr. Eric Lamb who will do justice to the discussion;”Why Fire Belongs in the Prairies.”
 
Dr. Eric Lamb is a Professor in the Department of Plant Science, University of Saskatchewan and Curator of the WP Fraser Herbarium. He is a plant ecologist with expertise and research interests including rangeland ecology and management, fire ecology, statistical ecology, and conservation biology. He holds a BSc. from UBC, an MSc. from Lakehead University, and a PhD. in grassland ecology from the University of Alberta. He has successfully supervised or co-supervised numerous graduate students and has published more than 80 peer reviewed papers including papers in leading journals such as Ecology, Journal of Ecology, and Rangeland Ecology and Management.

Dr. Lamb’s research is currently focused on grassland fire ecology, with an emphasis on how the reintroduction of fire can be a tool for improved grassland management.

Did you know that in a native grassland, the vast majority of life is out of sight? 

In fact, up to 80% of a native prairie plant’s total weight (biomass) is stored underground in its extensive root system! 
 
This incredible adaptation is what allows our prairie grasses a nd wildflowers to bounce back so quickly after a prescribed fire activity. 
 
While prescribed fire removes dead grass and woody brush above the surface, the vast majority of native grasses and wildflowers remain completely unharmed.  
Their deep root systems, sometimes reaching 10 to 15 feet into the soil, are protected and store energy like an underground battery. 
 
This unique partnership between native fire adapted plants and good fire ensures healthier more resilient prairie ecosystems for everyone
