Our 2026 Oskana Plains TREX summary is now available online! Check it out, along with previous TREX summaries, at grasslandfire.ca/trex-summaries. 🔥

: Despite two snowstorms and a narrow burn window, the first-ever Oskana Plains TREX brought together 19 participants from 12 agencies for a week of prescribed fire training, leadership development, and collaboration in and around Regina, Sask from April 20-24, 2026.

Hosted by SaskParks with support from the CPPFE, the event helped build fire management capacity across the prairies while strengthening partnerships and mentorship opportunities with hands-on ignition and equipment training helping complete six successful burn units covering 50 acres.

We’re already looking forward to continuing to make these training opportunities accessible to practitioners across the Prairies! A special thank you to the Weston Family Prairie Grasslands Initiative for continuing to make this possible for us.

Tune in to CBC Saskatchewan’s Blue Sky on Monday, May 11, 2026, from 12:00–1:00 PM as the conversation turns to prescribed fire in Saskatchewan and the growing role of and on our landscapes.

We’ll be discussing how prescribed fire helps maintain native grasslands, reduce shrub and tree invasion, improve wildlife habitat, increase forage production for livestock, and reduce wildfire risk across the Prairies.

Joining host Leisha Grebinski for the discussion:
• Renny Grilz from Meewasin Valley Authority and the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange
• Samantha Gunn from the Brightwater Center with the Saskatoon Public Schools
• Ian Hnatowich from Wanuskewin Heritage Park
• Sam Morrison from the Aberdeen Municipal Pasture near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan

Listen live online or on 540 AM across Saskatchewan as we explore how fire can be used as a safe and effective tool to steward prairie landscapes.
