Fire extinguishers are the first line of defence when it comes to fighting a fire but did you know there are different types of fires?
You need to know the fire type before attempting to extinguish it.
The five types of fires are:
Class A: Trash, wood, cloth, paper and other ordinary combustibles start Class A fires.
Class B: Gasoline, oil, propane, paint and flammable gases and liquids start Class B fires.
Class C: Electrical equipment is always involved in Class C fires. Examples can include electrical short-circuiting and sparking from poor connections.
Class D: Rarer Class D fires involve combustible metal alloys and metals like sodium, potassium, lithium, and more.
Class K: Cooking fires are started by grease, cooking oils, animal fat, vegetable fat and similar materials.
Types of Fire Extinguishers
ABC Fire extinguishers are the most commonly used for Class A,B and C fires
BC Fire extinguishers are used for Class B and C fires and will not properly extinguish Class A fires
C02 Fire extinguishers are used for Class C fires
Class D fire extinguishers are used to fight Class D fires
Class K fire extinguishers are used in the culinary industry for Class K fires. Class K fire extinguishers are second line of defence if a Automated Fire Suppression System is installed to prevent re-flash.
