Here is an example of why 6 year maintenance is required on your fire extinguishers. This extinguisher was completely fully charged prior to the maintenance. Upon discharge the handle would not expel the chemical. Once the pressure was safely released and tore down. The valve and spring were corroded causing malfunction in the discharge. This could have become a disastrous situation if this extinguisher was the only line of defence. Proper care and maintenance saves lives! At K & J Fire Services, we take pride in our work and the safety of our clients! Call us today!

🔥Friday Fire Facts🔥

Fire extinguishers are the first line of defence when it comes to fighting a fire but did you know there are different types of fires?

You need to know the fire type before attempting to extinguish it.

The five types of fires are:

Class A: Trash, wood, cloth, paper and other ordinary combustibles start Class A fires.

Class B: Gasoline, oil, propane, paint and flammable gases and liquids start Class B fires.

Class C: Electrical equipment is always involved in Class C fires. Examples can include electrical short-circuiting and sparking from poor connections.

Class D: Rarer Class D fires involve combustible metal alloys and metals like sodium, potassium, lithium, and more.

Class K: Cooking fires are started by grease, cooking oils, animal fat, vegetable fat and similar materials.

Types of Fire Extinguishers

ABC Fire extinguishers are the most commonly used for Class A,B and C fires

BC Fire extinguishers are used for Class B and C fires and will not properly extinguish Class A fires

C02 Fire extinguishers are used for Class C fires

Class D fire extinguishers are used to fight Class D fires

Class K fire extinguishers are used in the culinary industry for Class K fires. Class K fire extinguishers are second line of defence if a Automated Fire Suppression System is installed to prevent re-flash.

🔥 Friday Fire Facts 🔥

Did you know that you may have an obsolete fire extinguisher?

There are many obsolete fire extinguishers throughout the province that most people don’t know they have in their possession.

NFPA-10 provides guidelines for which types of extinguishers are considered obsolete and should be removed from service.

Types of Obsolete Fire Extinguishers:

- Soda Acid
- Chemical Foam
- Vaporizing Liquids (Carbon Tetrachloride)
- Cartridge-operated water
- Cartridge-operated loaded stream
- Copper or brass shell (excluding pump tanks) joined by soft solder or rivets
- Carbon dioxide extinguishers with metal horns
- Solid charge type AFFF (paper cartridge)
- Pressurized water extinguishers manufactured prior to 1971
- Any extinguisher that needs to be inverted to operate
- Any stored pressure extinguisher manufactured prior to 1955
- Any extinguisher with 4B, 6B, 8B, 12B, and 16B fire ratings
- Stored-pressure water extinguishers with fiberglass shells (pre-1976)
- Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguisher manufactured prior to October 1984

In addition to the types of extinguishers listed above, any fire extinguisher that can no longer be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s maintenance manual, or was made by a company that is no longer in business, is considered obsolete and should be removed from service.

If you have questions regarding obsolete fire extinguishers, please contact us for more information and would be happy to help!
