Local New Democrats condemn both MP Marilyn Gladu and the Carney Liberals for allowing the ultra-conservative member to cross the floor.

“Marilyn Gladu is on the record for positions that are anti-abortion, racist, anti-vaccine, and anti-2SLGBTQIA+. Clearly none of these were an issue for the governing Liberals,” said local NDP riding association president Skylar Maharaj. “Her party colours won't disguise her views. If anything, we have learned more today about the values—or lack thereof—of this government.”

In 2018, Gladu angered the Mexican embassy with racist comments linking Mexicans to illegal drug trading. In 2020, Gladu ran for the leadership of the federal Conservatives on a promise of allowing MPs to introduce legislation that restricts abortion. In 2021, Gladu led opposition to the bill banning conversion therapy. In 2022, she supported the anti-vaccine “Freedom Convoy” that illegally held Ottawans hostage for weeks.

“The Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong NDP will continue to hold MP Gladu and the Liberal government to account for their record on human rights, public safety, and access to health care,” said Maharaj.

The NDP’s position on floor-crossing has not changed: members are elected to represent their riding under a declared party. If their affiliation changes, they should resign so voters can make an informed choice in a by-election.

We understood this to be Gladu’s own position, stated as recently as January of this year. We look forward to receiving her resignation and will be ready for the by-election when it is called.

We are saddened by the passing of former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis. He was a giant in our social justice movement. His voice will be missed, and his contributions will continue to shape our work.

Statement on the Passing of Stephen Lewis

The Broadbent Institute mourns the loss of former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis. Lewis was a committed democratic socialist who worked closely with Ed Broadbent during his time as leader of Canada’s NDP, and in their concurrent careers in internationalism. Ed was a frequent interlocutor of Stephen Lewis, having also worked closely with his father, David Lewis, during his time as a new Member of Parliament.

Ed Broadbent and Stephen Lewis careers in political leadership are intertwined. In Luke Savage’s recent remarks at the 2026 Progress Summit on Ed’s “Social Democracy Across Borders,” their thought leadership and views on the world were similarly formed and paths began to cross early on:

"His first published writing on a question related to foreign policy I’ve been able to find comes in the form of a report, written in October 1956 while Ed was an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, for its student newspaper The Varsity (incidentally where I got my start as a writer).

The occasion for that report was a debate held at Hart House about Canada’s membership in NATO in which Lester B. Pearson faced off against a quite precocious second year student from University College by the name of Stephen Lewis."

In 'Seeking Social Democracy,' Broadbent expressed his pride and hope for Lewis’ ONDP leadership in the 1975 provincial election that brought forward the first social democratic Official Opposition in Ontario since 1948. Throughout Lewis’ career as Canada’s UN representative, UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, and as deputy director of UNICEF, Ed Broadbent’s work as President of Rights & Democracy would often cross paths again on the global stage.

The Broadbent Institute recognizes the legacy and values of Stephen Lewis as a part of the work that Ed built the foundations of our organization on. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Lewis family at this time.
