🍎 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 & 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱🍎

For 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗠𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲, farming is in their roots — and they’re putting those roots to work building something special for the community at Belkerke Farm & Orchard in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗵𝗮𝗺.

The VanMoerkerkes purchased the 𝟭𝟬𝟬-𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 in May 2020, which included an established apple orchard. With Evan coming from a cash-cropping family, they saw an opportunity to diversify their farming operation while preserving the property’s long history of growing apples. What began as a learning experience has evolved into an 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁-𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟱 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀, with plans to continue planting new varieties and rebuilding the orchard. Along the way, the family has benefited from the generosity and knowledge of other local orchardists who have shared advice, equipment and expertise.

Today, Belkerke Farm & Orchard is becoming much more than an orchard. The farm offers a 𝘂-𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵-𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗻𝗯. The u-pick season typically runs from September through October, giving families and visitors the opportunity to spend time on the farm, learn about different apple varieties and enjoy a taste of the countryside.

For Evan and Jessica, the goal is to build the farm with the community in mind. Their vision includes 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱, creating more 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻, offering 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀, and continuing to 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

⛈ 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 – 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺

Environment Canada has issued an Orange Level Watch for severe thunderstorms in Elgin County for this afternoon into this evening. An orange level alert indicates the potential for high impacts if severe weather develops.

Conditions are favourable for dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, torrential rain, and possibly a tornado.

Potential hazards include:

💨 Damaging wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h
🧊 Quarter to ping pong ball-sized hail
🌧️ Torrential downpours with local rainfall amounts up to 50 mm
🌪️ Risk of a tornado
🔦 Possible power outages and significant damage to property, buildings, and trees

Be prepared for severe weather and take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. If possible, move to a basement or interior room away from windows.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Elgin County, with hot and humid conditions expected through Wednesday and possibly continuing into Thursday.

Daytime highs of 30 to 32°C, overnight lows of 20 to 23°C, and humidex values near 40 are expected.

Extreme heat can affect everyone's health. Older adults, people living alone, and others at greater risk of heat-related illness should be checked on regularly during the heat event.

Watch for early signs of heat exhaustion, including headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue. Stop your activity, move to a cooler place, and drink water.

🏠 Stay cool indoors or visit a cool public space
👥 Check on older adults and others who may be at greater risk
☀️ Plan outdoor activities for the coolest parts of the day and limit direct sun exposure
🚗 Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle

This morning, Warden Giguère joined Elgin County staff, representatives from St.Thomas-Elgin Crime Stoppers, and members of the Elgin OPP to raise the Crime Stoppers flag at the Elgin County Heritage Centre.

Throughout September, Crime Stoppers Month raises awareness of the important role the organization plays in supporting safe communities across St. Thomas and Elgin County.

Crime Stoppers provides members of the public with a way to anonymously report suspicious or criminal activity, while working in partnership with the community, media, and local police to support community safety.

Elgin County is proud to proclaim September 2026 as Crime Stoppers Month and recognize the ongoing work of St. Thomas-Elgin Crime Stoppers.

Pesticide use is being carried out under the Public Works Exception to Ontario's Cosmetic Pesticides Ban for the promotion of public health and safety.
