Wait, what?!?! Smoke alarms expire??? Yes, they do!

All smoke alarms wear out. You need to replace them every 10 years according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Check the back or the side of the smoke alarm to find the expiry/replacement date. If you purchase a new alarm, remember to write-in the date it was installed - there is usually a spot on the side of the alarm where you can fill in this information.

Test them monthly!

Camping and cottage nights are for relaxing - not reacting

With peak season in full swing, campfires and BBQs are everywhere. But one unattended flame can spread fast in dry conditions.

Don’t leave it till it’s out:
✔ Pour water on it
✔ Stir it up to ensure no hidden embers
✔ Make sure it’s completely cool

Because the only thing that should be spreading this summer is good vibes.

🛑Dorm Room Fire Safety Tips🛑
1. Keep It Clear: Avoid blocking exits with furniture or belongings.
2. No Overloading: Don't overload electrical outlets or power strips.
3. Unplug Devices: Unplug appliances when not in use, especially hot plates and irons.
4. Cook Safely: Use approved appliances and never leave cooking unattended.
5. Know the Plan: Familiarize yourself with your dorm’s fire evacuation plan and locate the nearest exits.
6. Smoke Alarms: Ensure your room has a working smoke alarm, and never disable it.
7. Fire Drills: Participate in fire drills and take them seriously.
8. No Smoking: Follow your dorm's smoking policy and avoid smoking indoors.

If you drive past an accident on a roadway, where emergency vehicles are stopped and blocking a lane, here's what to do:

Single lane: When approaching any emergency vehicle that is stopped with its red, or red and blue, lights flashing or a tow truck with its amber lights flashing in the same direction of your travel, you are required to reduce the speed of your vehicle and proceed with caution.

Two or more lanes: When the roadway has two or more lanes of traffic in the same direction of your travel, you are required to move into a lane away from the emergency vehicle or tow truck, if safe to do so, in addition to reducing the speed of your vehicle and proceeding with caution. 🚗

Heading to the cottage this weekend? Remember that cottages require working smoke alarms. If you have a fuel burning appliance or attached garage, you will also need a working CO alarm by sleeping areas. Be sure to bring some spare alarms and replaceable batteries if your alarm requires batteries. Have fun!
