Community Notice: Bighouse Opening Postponed

Date: August 14, 2024

To the Members of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation,
At the request of the Gukwdzi Project Management & Construction Team, the Bighouse opening that we just announced for September 30th is being postponed due to unforeseen material delays and need to ensure safety throughout the building. A lot of progress has been made, construction is over 90% complete, but our top priority is making sure that the quality of the build reflects how significant this opening will be to the Gwa’sala ‘Nakwaxda’xw community that has waited so long.

We know that this news is disappointing and want you to know that this decision was not taken lightly. We are also upset and do not want to have people wait any longer for their Gukwdzi. We remain committed to providing clear updates and addressing community concerns. We apologize to the hereditary Chiefs for having to ask them to delay this opening.

As part of our commitment to sharing information and preparing for the opening in a good way, we will invite all community members to a late-summer feast - where we will discuss the Bighouse status and outline the final steps to be completed.

We sincerely wish that this delay could be avoided, but it would not have been right to try to rush things and sacrifice the safety and quality of such an amazing building after all the work that has gone into getting so close. We look forward to hosting you so you can ask any questions you may still have – and to celebrate the Bighouse opening that the Nation deserves.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Gilakas’la,

The Gukwdzi Project Management and Construction Team

Clarification: An internal press release intended for Ottawa stakeholders was inadvertently shared publicly earlier today. There will be a second release approved by council. We apologize for any confusion and will issue an updated statement shortly to provide clear information on the state of emergency and its impact on our community. This mix-up was an administrative error, and we are taking steps to ensure our communication channels are streamlined for future updates.

In a crucial meeting with Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu our team highlighted the pressing housing crisis facing the Gwanak Nations Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations Treaty due to the imminent flood plane threat. We also addressed the long-standing impacts of forced relocation.

Immediate support is paramount as we navigate through this state of emergency. We are grateful for the Minister's attention to these urgent matters and look forward to collaborative solutions that will safeguard our community's future.

"With a delegation led by Chief Terry Walkus of the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nation! This afternoon I hosted a meeting with Senators Arnot, White and Greenwood to discuss some of the issues impacting the community, including the lasting impact of their forceful relocation and amalgamation from their traditional lands in the 1960s and their ongoing efforts to negotiate a treaty with B.C. and Canada."

We are pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with Brian Francis and discuss the issues impacting our community.

Specifically the lasting impact of our forceful relocation and amalgamation from our traditional lands. Brian, along with other Senate Members: Judy White, David Arnot, and BC Senator Margo Greenwood.

The key take away shared amongst our delegation was that our Nations story and Chiefs were heard.
