Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary This account is not monitored 24 hours. RVWS is located in North Gower, Ontario. Many issues can be resolved through these resources.

If you need help regarding wildlife, send an email to [email protected] with a photo of the animal, the address where the animal was found, a detailed description of how you found it, and your phone number. The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (RVWS) is a not-for-profit corporation and registered charity (registration # 82731 7744 RR0001). Our mission is to treat and care for injured or orph

aned wild mammals and reptiles until they are healthy enough to be returned to the wild. We also offer advice to the public on rescuing wildlife, co-existing peacefully with wildlife, and preventing or solving wildlife conflicts using humane, cost-effective ways. Our street address is not public because we are located on private property; RVWS is not a public drop-in centre; and our first priority when assessing potentially orphaned wildlife is to make sure they need help, and determine if reuniting the babies with their mom is feasible. Our website, www.rideauwildlife.org/help has extensive information by species on when to rescue wildlife, how to reunite babies with their mom and solutions to common problems. To contact us, please send an email to [email protected] with your phone number, a photo of the animal, details on how you found it and the address you found it. Thank you for helping wildlife.

Want to help wildlife and enjoy the RVWS Open House at the same time? RVWS is looking for volunteers to help our event run smoothly. We need help on half-day shifts on June 5 for set-up, the event June 6-7, and tear-down on June 8. We have many volunteer rolls to fill, such as installing tents; tear-down after the event; helping at various stations; bbqing, food sales and service; organizing games in the kids zone and much more. Happy World Otter Day!

Here’s a throwback to one of our otters meeting some minnows for the first time.

Otters are very social. Land groups are called "romps", while aquatic groups are called "rafts". Some sea otters carry a rock in their armpit used to crack open their food and they sometimes hold hands so they don't drift apart.

Happy World Turtle Day!

There are over 300 species of turtles worldwide. They live everywhere except Antarctica. Ontario is home to eight species of turtle, all of which are at risk. The three most common turtle species in the Ottawa region are the Blanding’s, Painted and Snapping.

If you find a turtle on the road, you can help it across in the direction it is heading.

These baby chipmunks were found during a foundation repair. The mom was frantically running around the site and began digging out a new den. They were kept in a truck with the heating on until they put the babies back outside. The mom ended up retrieving her 6 babies into a new and safe den.

Almost every situation is unique and we’re here to provide advice. Before you take any action, please email [email protected] with photos of the problem area (e.g. hole in attic, hole under a deck) and the animal if you have one, a detailed description of the problem and species, your phone number and your neighbourhood. We’ll get back to you with DIY, cost-effective and humane solutions.

If you decide to hire an animal control company, please be aware that it often runs in the thousands of dollars, and the industry is not regulated so anyone can call themselves an animal control expert.

This weekend is a popular time for camping, gardening, relaxing and spending time outdoors with family and friends.

Here are some tips to help keep our wild friends safe and healthy this weekend too!

- avoid using fireworks that disrupt natural wildlife behaviour
- adhere to the speed limit to help reduce collisions
- avoid celebrating with balloons that can cause entanglement, and a slow painful death from starvation if ingested
- keep your picnic/camping areas clean; put food away in a secure place at night
- keep your pets leashed
don’t feed wildlife – it’s illegal

Have a fantastic weekend.

Friendly Reminder. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the perfect gift for mom each year. Maybe she has everything she needs or maybe she’s a tad picky? If you find yourself in that situation, how about a special gift to celebrate her and help injured and orphaned wildlife at the same time?

When you give to RVWS through Canada Helps, you can send your own personal message, send her a special photo like the one below, and have your Mother’s Day shopping wrapped up in less than five minutes.

You and your gift will show mom how much you care. And, you will be helping give the animals in our care a second chance at life.

Mother’s Day can be a heavy day for those of us who have lost a mom. Feel free to celebrate her life and your bond with a gift in her memory.
